Good Manners
People all over the world set great regard on good manners. To certain degree, good manners indicate a person's good education and breeding. In schools, it is part of students' moral training to develop good manners. A person with good manners always wins praise. On the contrary, people will frown on him if he behaves roughly and impolitely.
There are good manners in which we behave in public places. It is a good manner to offer help to the young, the old and the handicapped when they are in need of it. So is it to conduct ourselves politely and keep away from foul language. Besides, we should guard against such minor offences as making loud noises, smoking, and spitting.
If everyone has developed good manners, people will form a more harmonious relationship. If everyone behaves considerately towards others and follows the social ethics, people will live in a better world. With the general mood of society improved, there will be some progress of civilization.

To Be Busy Or To Be Idle
Many people we know prefer to live a busy life. They enjoy making tight schedules and doing everything in a hurry. They simply like the feeling of being totally engaged in their work. They often stick to one principle: work hard and play hard.
Still, there are other people who find great fun in an idle life. They hate to hurry all the time, arguing that they take their time just to reach high efficiency. In fact, most of them are productive
despite their loose schedules, and only a few live a non-productive life. Feeling empty at heart, they kill time in various ways.
I agree with the work -hard -and -play -hard principle because only in this way can we complete our work in time and relax ourselves after a good days work.

Don't Hesitate to Say “No”
Being helpful is one of the virtues that people must possess. So when anyone is encountered with difficulty, we should give him a hand .But under certain circumstances we should say “No”, for example when we are asked to de something illegal.
But it is very hard for some people to say “No” when they ought to. They can't very well refuse, because they are afraid of being regarded as being miserly or inconsiderate and even worry about being isolated from others.
Deep down in their hearts, they are reluctant. They don't speak out what's on their mind. Such kind of situation is harmful to both the giver and the receiver. To the giver, he doesn't take the full responsibility for what he done. His help may lead to the receiver's full dependence of others and sometimes even become a factor in helping the receiver go astray. So don't hesitate to say “No ” when you ought to .

Do “Lucky Numbers” Really Bring Good Luck?
Nowadays many people are crazy about some "lucky numbers". They would pay twice the usual price for a "lucky" telephone numbers, or several times of the usual price for a “lucky ” car number
or other numbers. Some of them will not open a business, or set out on a journey, or have a wedding until they choose a date with “lucky number ”. Why? Because the so-called “lucky numbers ” contain 6s or 8s, both sound like Chinese characters meaning good luck and wealth. Personally speaking, these "lucky numbers" cannot bring good luck to people at all. Those with blind belief in "lucky" numbers are absurd and superstitious. We have never heard that Bill Gates, the wealthiest person in the world at present, ever drove a car with a number of 888. Here is another example, a man I know very well still lacks money, though he has got a "lucky" phone number for many years! There are many other examples which can prove the ridiculousness of “lucky numbers”, with only two being mentioned here. As a matter of fact, good luck has nothing to do with "lucky" numbers. I do believe that good luck depends on talent, as well as hard work. 5

Reading Selectively or Extensively
Now, the great importance of reading is self-evident and widely shared. But when it comes to how to read, there is a heated discussion as to whether we should read selectively or we should read extensively.
Those who believe we should read selectively argue that it is advisable to concentrate on reading books that appeal to us most or are relevant to our professional fields as life is so short and knowledge is expanding at an incredible speed. In addition, they maintain that we should avoid reading books which advocate violence, sex, racial discrimination because they are poisonous to our minds. However, those who are in favor of reading extensively deem that if our reading is confined to a narrow field, our overall development and scientific exploration would probably suffer. For instance, natural sciences and humanities, although profoundly different, overlap a lot. In short, reading extensively plays a critical role in our individual development or scientific research.
It seems to me that reading extensively could broaden my horizon and enrich my experience while reading selectively could make me more skilled in a certain field.

Directions: For this part ,you are allowed thirty minutes to write a composition on the topic “Opportunity and Success”. You should write at least 120 words, and base your composition on the outline(given in Chinese)below:
Opportunity and Success
Opportunities don't come often. They come every once in a while. Very often, they come quietly and go by without being noticed. Therefore, it is advisable that you should value and treat them with care. When an opportunity comes, it brings a promise but never realizes it on its own. If you want to achieve something or intend to fulfill one of your ambitions, you must work hard, make efforts and get well-prepared. Otherwise, you will take no advantage of opportunities when they come to visit you. The difference between one who succeeds and one who fails lies only in the way each treats opportunities. The successful person always makes adequate preparations to meet opportunities as they duly arrive. The unsuccessful person, on the other hand, works little and just waits to see them pass by. In my opinion, there are plenty of opportunities for everyone in our society, but only those who are adequately prepared and highly qualified can make use of them to achieve their aims.
