Good Manners

People all over the world set great regard on good manners. To certain degree, good manners indicate a person's good education and breeding. In schools, it is part of students' moral training to develop good manners. A person with good manners always wins praise. On the contrary, people will frown on him if he behaves roughly and impolitely.

There are good manners in which we behave in public places. It is a good manner to offer help to the young, the old and the handicapped when they are in need of it. So is it to conduct ourselves politely and keep away from foul language. Besides, we should guard against such minor offences as making loud noises, smoking, and spitting.

If everyone has developed good manners, people will form a more harmonious relationship. If everyone behaves considerately towards others and follows the social ethics, people will live in a better world. With the general mood of society improved, there will be some progress of civilization.

To Be Busy Or To Be Idle

Many people we know prefer to live a busy life. They enjoy making tight schedules and doing everything in a hurry. They simply like the feeling of being totally engaged in their work. They often stick to one principle: work hard and play hard.

Still, there are other people who find great fun in an idle life. They hate to hurry all the time, arguing that they take their time just to reach high efficiency. In fact, most of them are productive

despite their loose schedules, and only a few live a non-productive life. Feeling empty at heart, they kill time in various ways.

I agree with the work -hard -and -play -hard principle because only in this way can we complete our work in time and relax ourselves after a good days work.

Directions: For this part, you are allowed thirty minutes to write a composition on the topic: Don't Hesitate to Say “No”. You should write at least 120 words and base your composition on the outline (given in Chinese) below:

1)别人请求帮助时,在什么情况下我们会说“不”

2)为什么有些人在该说“不”的时候不说“不”

3)该说“不”时不说“不”的坏处

Don't Hesitate to Say “No”

Being helpful is one of the virtues that people must possess. So when anyone is encountered with difficulty, we should give him a hand .But under certain circumstances we should say “No”, for example when we are asked to de something illegal.

But it is very hard for some people to say “No” when they ought to. They can't very well refuse, because they are afraid of being regarded as being miserly or inconsiderate and even worry about being isolated from others.

Deep down in their hearts, they are reluctant. They don't speak out what's on their mind. Such kind of situation is harmful to both the giver and the receiver. To the giver, he doesn't take the full responsibility for what he done. His help may lead to the receiver's full dependence of others and sometimes even become a factor in helping the receiver go astray. So don't hesitate to say “No ” when you ought to .

Do “Lucky Numbers” Really Bring Good Luck?

Nowadays many people are crazy about some "lucky numbers". They would pay twice the usual price for a "lucky" telephone numbers, or several times of the usual price for a “lucky ” car number

or other numbers. Some of them will not open a business, or set out on a journey, or have a wedding until they choose a date with “lucky number ”. Why? Because the so-called “lucky numbers ” contain 6s or 8s, both sound like Chinese characters meaning good luck and wealth. Personally speaking, these "lucky numbers" cannot bring good luck to people at all. Those with blind belief in "lucky" numbers are absurd and superstitious. We have never heard that Bill Gates, the wealthiest person in the world at present, ever drove a car with a number of 888. Here is another example, a man I know very well still lacks money, though he has got a "lucky" phone number for many years! There are many other examples which can prove the ridiculousness of “lucky numbers”, with only two being mentioned here. As a matter of fact, good luck has nothing to do with "lucky" numbers. I do believe that good luck depends on talent, as well as hard work. 5

Reading Selectively or Extensively

Now, the great importance of reading is self-evident and widely shared. But when it comes to how to read, there is a heated discussion as to whether we should read selectively or we should read extensively.

Those who believe we should read selectively argue that it is advisable to concentrate on reading books that appeal to us most or are relevant to our professional fields as life is so short and knowledge is expanding at an incredible speed. In addition, they maintain that we should avoid reading books which advocate violence, sex, racial discrimination because they are poisonous to our minds. However, those who are in favor of reading extensively deem that if our reading is confined to a narrow field, our overall development and scientific exploration would probably suffer. For instance, natural sciences and humanities, although profoundly different, overlap a lot. In short, reading extensively plays a critical role in our individual development or scientific research.

It seems to me that reading extensively could broaden my horizon and enrich my experience while reading selectively could make me more skilled in a certain field.

Directions: For this part ,you are allowed thirty minutes to write a composition on the topic “Opportunity and Success”. You should write at least 120 words, and base your composition on the outline(given in Chinese)below:

Opportunity and Success

Opportunities don't come often. They come every once in a while. Very often, they come quietly and go by without being noticed. Therefore, it is advisable that you should value and treat them with care. When an opportunity comes, it brings a promise but never realizes it on its own. If you want to achieve something or intend to fulfill one of your ambitions, you must work hard, make efforts and get well-prepared. Otherwise, you will take no advantage of opportunities when they come to visit you. The difference between one who succeeds and one who fails lies only in the way each treats opportunities. The successful person always makes adequate preparations to meet opportunities as they duly arrive. The unsuccessful person, on the other hand, works little and just waits to see them pass by. In my opinion, there are plenty of opportunities for everyone in our society, but only those who are adequately prepared and highly qualified can make use of them to achieve their aims.

Directions: For this part ,you are allowed thirty minutes to write a composition on the topic: “Private car ”. You should write at least 120 words, and base your composition on the outline (given in Chinese)below:

1)拥有私家车的利弊

2)有无必要增加私家车的产量,为什么?

Private Car

Nowadays, any Chinese can enjoy the luxury of owning a private car - if he or she can afford it. Having a car of your own means no more traveling to work on crowded buses or subway trains, and you can pick up the children at school on the way. Moreover, it also means that you can enjoy the weekends and holidays better, because with a car you can go to places where the regular buses and trains do not go, and so you can find a quiet scenic spot with no crowds.

However, there are drawbacks to owning a car. For one thing, with the increase in car ownership in recent years, the roads are becoming more and more crowded, often making the journey more of a nightmare than a dream. For another, it is not cheap to run a car, as the prices of gasoline and repairs are constantly rising, not to mention the prices you have to pay for a license and insurance coverage.

Having considered both sides of the argument, I have come to the conclusion that the advantages of owning a car outweigh the disadvantages. Therefore, China should increase its output of automobiles and enlarge the private car market. The result would be that cars would become cheaper, while at the same time the extra demand would encourage the auto industry to produce more high-quality and family-oriented vehicles.

Directions: For this part, you are allowed thirty minutes to write a composition on the topic: “Good Health ”. You should write at least 120words,and base your composition on the outline(given in Chinese)below :

Good Health

The desire for good health is universal. In our competitive society, it is important to maintain good health. On one hand, people with good health can do work with full confidence and their progress in work in turn contributes to their health and happiness. On the other hand, a sick person is usually not interested in everything around him and therefore he loses many opportunities to succeed.

There are many ways to keep it. First, those who are always on the go from morning till night should find time to relax because too much stress and strain will affect their health. Second, enough time should be left for sleep because that will help one become rested and refreshed. Finally, regular physical exercises benefit one's health a lot, so one should always keep in mind that a certain amount of exercise is not a waste of time.

As for me, I like playing tennis in the morning. I also attach much importance to enough sleep and relaxation. I believe this will ensure my good health for the rest of my life.

1) 当今校园里出现了很多攀比现象,太追求时髦,时尚。

The View of the Pursuit of Fashion

Some college students, supposed to dedicate themselves to studies, are in hot pursuit of fashion. This craze to vie with each other for pursuing fashion becomes prevalent in colleges and

universities.

Students should concentrate themselves exclusively on studies, which should be on the top of their agenda. Holding the right concept of value makes sense. To earn an impressive academic performance, we college students must pour determined efforts into study and pay no attention to vogue.

Keeping up with the Jones will result in the unavoidable distraction from studies. And college students are vulnerable to business promotional campaign. They are heavily targeted by fashion industry and widespread advertisements. We should compete with our peers for better scholarly achievement instead of more expensive designer clothes.

2) 阅览室灯光太暗、没有空调设备

3) 新开发的电子借阅系统有待完善——许多图书资料都无法使用该系统查到。

Dear President:

I'm Li Ming. I venture to write to you and unveil the existing problems of the library under your charge.

We exhaust our patience to look for items related to our major on shelves which are crammed with outdated shabby books. Most of them should be weeded. The newly published counterparts need to be purchased, displayed and circulated. The library armed with these fresh books will enable us to track the newest information concerning scientific discoveries and scholarly accomplishment.

We all suffer the dim light and the absence of air conditioner in the reading room. This intolerably terrible ambiance pressingly needs improving. The newly introduced library system is to be updated, for its search engine skips some valuable materials.

We are waiting for your response to these problems. Yours.

Li Ming

composition on the outline(given in Chinese)below:

1)目前大学毕业生的择业情况

2)男、女同学就业选择的区别

3)结论

What jobs do college graduates want to take?

The overwhelming majority of college graduates are being confronted with the ever-tougher job market. Most of them struggle to land a job in big cites like Beijing and Shanghai. So these priority areas draw a host of job candidates every year. Regardless of where to start their careers, some individuals give the priority to the anticipated well-paid positions.

Gender differences in the job application are striking. To avoid labor-intense jobs, girls focus their attention on financial and service sectors. Some of them find employment in schools. Boys always push hard to find a managerial or technical job.

Everyone expects to embark on a promising career to demonstrate his/her skills and capabilities. But position isn't tailored to every applicant. So college graduates must lower the over-high expectations and apply for proper jobs.

Directions: For this part ,you are allowed thirty minutes to write a composition on the topic “Smoking ”. You should write at least 120 words.

Smoking

It is almost known to all that smoking is bad for people's health. Scientific researches show that smoking can lead to heart disease, cancer and other problems. The World Health Organization says diseases linked to smoking kill at least two million five-hundred-thousand persons each year. Still, many people find it difficult to stop smoking. One reason is that smoking usually becomes a habitual behavior, and habits, whether good or bad are not easy to be given up. Another reason is the effect of nicotine, the substance found in cigarettes which works on people somewhat as drugs do.

Measures have been taken to help people keep away from the harm of smoking. In many cities, smoking is forbidden in public places. The danger of smoking is warned of everywhere. And newspaper has been asked not to publish advertisements for cigarettes. World “No Tobacco Day” is observed every year as the biggest campaign against smoking.

Directions: For this part ,you are allowed thirty minutes to write a composition on the topic “Population Control”. You should write at least 120 words.

Population Control

Progress in science and the improvement of living conditions have led to the rapid growth of the world population. Modern medicine, for example, has made it possible for babies to grow up healthily and for people to live longer. With improved living conditions, particularly in the countryside, people tend to have larger families. As a result, the world population has increased so rapidly that it has now exceeded 6 billion.

But the overgrowth of population presents a threat to the existence of human society. A large population demands a great deal of food supply and shelter space. However, limited productivity and scarce world resources can hardly meet the needs of the ever-increasing population. Thus, in the long run, the overgrowth of the world population will only harm mankind.

To guarantee the steady development of human society, mankind must realize the consequences resulting from fast population growth and carry out a family planning program. Only by adopting effective measures can human society develop steadily and have a bright future.

Attend Your Classes Regularly

Nowadays, it is a very common phenomenon for some university students to be late for or even be absent from their classes. And still there are some students who slip out of the classroom before the class is over. Class attendance has become a thorny problem to both the students and the teachers.

In fact, it is very important for the students to attend their classes regularly. First, it will ensure you to catch up with the teachers in your learning. That is very helpful to you if you want to do a good job in your study. Second, attending classes regularly is a way of showing respect to your teachers, too. Your teachers will feel bad if the students do not attend their classes, which, in return, will affect their teaching and be no good for both the students. Third, attending classes regularly will help to form a good habit of punctuality, which is of great importance for the students to do a good job in the future.

Therefore, we university students should form the good habit of attending our classes regularly from now on. And some day we will benefit from it.

.

Mobile Telephone Ownership as a Percentage of All Telephone Ownership

From the bar chart, we see the changes in the ownership of mobile phones as percentage of all telephones owned in Europe, USA and Asia respectively between 1993 and 1998 and a forecast about the percentages in year 2003.

In Europe, 4% of the telephone owners were mobile phone subscribers in 1993. The figure went up to 14% in 1998 and is expected to rise to 18% in 2003. In USA, the percentage was at 8%, the highest among the three areas in 1993. It increased to 18% in 1998 and is estimated at 34% in 2003. In Asia, only 2.5% of telephone owners were mobile phone users in 1993, the lowest among the three areas. The figure almost tripled to 7.5% in 1998 and is forecasted to reach 28% in the year 2003.
