Do the social experiment and the in-class interaction with your unfamiliar classmates shed a light on your understanding of turning strangers into friends? In which way are these activities illuminating to you? Elaborate on this in 400-500 words.

“Take off your hands when you’re no longer strangers”,read the paper sticking on the wall. Two strangers stand face to face, talking whatever run into their minds. Laugh, joke, smile and finally, shake their hands. Social experiments like this have actually become more and more popular recent years. A WeChat Official Accounts, Probability Theory, has launched a program called “a week of CP”, in which, participants were paired based on their self-introductions, which included basic information, sexual orientation and personality. The participants randomly paired were strangers, but would become a couple during the program which lasted a week. After the program, most of the couples became friends and kept in touch, and some of them kept being couples, and even walk the line to altar.

I always hold the belief that strangers can become friends or even lovers as long as we give it a try. During the in-class interaction with my unfamiliar classmates, which unfortunately lasted only five minutes, we talked about topics ranging from English learning to favorite movies, from weather to food in our hometown. It’s really interesting talking to people we didn't know before, which give me the reason to stick to my belief, and if time permitted, I have the feeling that we, strangers before, may become friends after the activity.

Furthermore, there do have reports showing that chatting with strangers bring

happiness to people. In my opinion, this may thanks to the social attributes of human. As it is told in the topic, people are constantly complaining about the apathy of society and how difficult to make real friends. People complain, because their needs of the sense of belonging to the society cannot be satisfied, because their social attribute is being restrained. Interacting with strangers, or say, interacting with human being out of our normal relationship, gives us a refreshed sense of belonging to the society, and meet the requirement of our social attribute.

Besides, what’s the reason for the phenomenon that people find it difficult to make real friends even though we are awash in acquaintances on social media? An interesting thing I notice during my trip by train is that, some people communicate with the strangers sitting next to them and become friends during a few hours, while others stay in their comfortable zone silently, strangers are still strangers. On one hand, in the modern society, in cities especially, our living habits, way of working have changed, which contributing to our interrelationship with others not so close as it used to be. People become careful and alert when being with strangers, so we are less possible to make the first step to make friends, that is to be free and sincere to start a topic. On the other hand, the social media, unfortunately, do have a negative effect on us. When communicating online, we are in a virtual world, which, to some extent, is isolated from the real world we live. In such circumstances, some people even have totally different personality online and offline, thus the friendship we have in the virtual world cannot extend to the real world. In the movie Before Sunrise, the two characters met as strangers on a train, but become lovers ever since. The romantic story may seem unrealistic, but have made me

believe that strangers can become friends or even lovers as long as we give it a try. Now, with the experiment and activity we had in class, I’ll take it as the truth.
