Jiangsu And Me

1 Jiangsu And Me

My hometown Jiangsu is a typical southern area, located in the lower reaches of the Yangtze River Delta, bordering Shandong province to the north, reaching south to Shanghai and Zhejiang province. As one of the most prosperous regions of China, Jiangsu is exerting itself to head for a better position in our country. Like many other citizens living in Jiangsu, I am deeply proud of it, love it and would like to advance with it.

Jiangsu has long been entitled with “a land of fish and rice” for its possession of numerous rivers and subtropical climate. Our mother river the Yangtze River flows across Jiangsu from east to west, which nourishes generations of Chinese people and brings about inviting views along these rivers. I still remember a dreamlike poet in childhood ------- “Row, row , row a boat , row to Grandmother’s bridge…”, portraying a delightful picture and feeling in the scenery with mountains and rivers. Actually, Jiangsu was never lack of such sparking and clean water in the old days, when urban life was closely related to rivers. It is said that each turn of the boat affords a different view. Water for daily use was mainly gained from rivers. Take my grandfather ’s life for instance, he could make water well-preserved for drinking, planting, washing and cooling even with the simplest tools such as tanks, potteries, bowls. My grandfather told me that at that time, rivers were clear enough to

2 glimpse fish so that fishermen could always benefit from them. I believe that was also a reason in which busy fish marketers were often seen right near rivers. On the other hand, our traditional planting in aspects of grain and cotton played an important part in national economic strength and local people’s diet. There was a spell in my childhood when I could taste traditional Jiangsu cuisines of all kind. Candy lotus was elaborate made and I could feel the lingering taste; mung bean soup was especially cool in summer evening … I enjoy the light color, proper aroma, sweet taste and fancy appearance of Jiangsu cuisine.

Life depended on rivers has lasted for thousands of years until the coming of modern time, when science and technology is rapidly-growing. Today, traditional industries in Jiangsu have been widely upgraded. Thanks to modern agricultural technologies like soil-less cultivation and super-hybrid rice, food production has a trend of constant increasing. The emergence of modern transportation, in addition, makes long-distance exchange accessible at any time. Both urban and rural markets have been brisk in recent years with the aid of the Nanjing-Yangtze Bridge and Yangtze Tunnel. All these scientific achievements have breathed new life into our land of rice and fish.

Tourism is another unique feature that contributes to our beautiful Jiangsu. Every year, tourists from all parts of the world flood into scenic spots and historical sites in Jiangsu, adoring typical Jiangsu architectural

3 style of antique beauty, which is vividly shown by picturesque private gardens. Suzhou, the city I have been living in for 20 year , is the oldest city of Jiangsu with 2500 years of cultural treasures, and has been a must-see sight for tourists. Ancient artifacts, paintings, works of silk of Suzhou are so exquisite that foreigners are marveled at them. Several days ago when I was hanging out on an old town, I saw a European and his wife carefully picking up antique as their souvenirs. They call Suzhou a paradise full of treasures on the earth. I told them that there are far more valuable things in Suzhou: private gardens, Suzhou embroidery and Kun Drama. Like me, they began to digest their trip in our beautiful Suzhou. Along with our graceful Suzhou gardens, temples and other religious historical sites remaining in many cities in Jiangsu are also attractive enough to feast our eyes. For example, the Bronze Buddha in Wuxi is the tallest standing Buddha in the world. The glory of the sunrise, matching with the huge Buddha, always looks solemn and majestic. Standing at the top of the mountain where the huge Buddha is located and looking as far as eye can see, we can hold a panoramic view of the whole Wuxi ---- a city nestling under Mount Ling and near Taihu Lake. It is compelling enough to arouse my meditations on life and nature. In a word, a man will be too delighted to leave if he visits Jiangsu.

Since the government put more emphasis on tourism industry and

From the modern, well-designed and civilized urban life to the pure, natural and productive rural life in Jiangsu, my hometown offers the unique promise of experiencing the past but with one eye always looking towards the future. We believe in the near future, our beautiful Jiangsu will make it a more fascinating place in China.
