(Heading )

123 Tianhe Road

Tianhe District

Guangzhou 510620

Guangdong Province

P. R. C.

March 15, 2002

(Inside Address)

(Salutation )

Dear Professor/Prof. Bergen:

Dear Dr. Johnson,

Dear Sir: 或Dear Madam: Dear Ladies。

Dear Sir, Dear Sirs, Sirs, Gentlemen, Dear Madame,

Ladies or Madame, To Whom It May Concern.

(Body of Letter)

(Complimentary Close)

Yours truly, Yours sincerely, Respectfully yours, Cordially yours, Yours cordially

Sincerely yours, Lovely yours, Your lovely, Your loving son/daughter等。 (Signature )

Outline:

I. Extending my welcome

II. Holiday schedule1. 1st day – campus2. 2nd day – the art gallery & music hall3. 3rd day – mountain climbing4. next 3 days – other places of interest (Swan Cave, Golden Lake „)5. Last day – departure

A Letter to A Schoolmate

June 23, 2001

Dear Xiao Wang,

I ’m very glad to learn that you ’re going to visit me during the week-long holiday. My parents will also be happy to see you again. I am sure you will enjoy every minute here.

I have arranged our schedule for the holiday as follows. On the first day you arrive, I’ll show you around our campus. On the second day, we’ll visit the art gallery and the music hall. Next day, we’ll climb a hill in the northeastern part of the city. On the top of the hill, we can have a wonderful bird‟s eye view of the city. During the next three days, we‟ll make some short trips to some places of interest nearby, such as the Swan Cave, the Golden Lake, etc. On the last day, I‟ll see you off at the railway station.

Please remember to call and tell me your train number and time of arrival so that I can meet you at the railway station. By the way, it’s very hot here and we have a lot of sunshine, so don’t forget to wear you sunglasses.

I ’m looking forward to seeing you soon.

Yours,

提出要求和理由;

解释详细的情况;

September 1, 2001

Dear Sir or Madam:

I ’m writing to complain about a typewriter I bought seven months ago. In February of 2001 I bought a Jones Typewriter, Portable Special Model, at ABC Store, I had used it only a few days when the space bar broke.

I took it to a local shop, they told me it was factory defect and suggest I take it back to ABC. ABC accepted the machine and sent the part in. I waited three months, and since your company did not send a replacement, they let me have the space bar from another typewriter.

Now, six months later, it has broken again. I took it back to ABC. They are no longer carrying your typewriter, but they assured me that the guarantee is still good and suggested that I write you for further instructions as to what steps to take. I will appreciate anything you can do to help us on this matter.

Respectfully,

2) 购物地点: at ABC Store

Jones Typewriter, Portable Special Model

I will appreciate anything you can do to help us on this matter.

Directions: For this part, you are allowed thirty minutes to write a letter. Suppose you are Zhang Ying. Write a letter to Xiao Wang, a schoolmate of yours who is going to visit you during the week-long holiday. You should write at least 120 words according to the suggestions given below in Chinese.

Dear Xiao Wang,

Is it really true? Are you coming to visit me for the upcoming holiday? We have not seen each other for such a long time and I have missed you.

Do you have any plans for what you would like to do? Since you are not familiar with where I live, I can make some recommendations. There are many scenic spots in the suburbs. When you first get here, we could plan a camping trip with some of my classmates. We can also visit the museums which are very interesting. And, we can go shopping! The shopping malls downtown are large and many have discount promotions during the holidays.

What do you think of my recommendations? I should tell you that the weather here is much colder so you should bring a warm overcoat. Please also take care of your belonging during your travel here as there has been much theft reported.

I am looking forward to your visit.

My best wishes.

Yours,

Zhang Ying

Dear Xiao Wang,

I’m delighted to learn that you are going to visit me during the week-long vacation. My parents will also be happy to see you again. I’m sure you will enjoy every minute here.

I know you are fond of swimming. A river lies not far away from my home. We can go swimming there. I think it would be very pleasant and refreshing to swim in such hot summer days. In every big room of my home there is an air-conditioner. We can watch TV, play CDs or read books very comfortably at home.

A mountain about two miles away from here is beautiful and it is worth touring. We can go there on foot. When we climb to the top of the mountain, we can have a wonderful bird-eye view of the whole village.

Just phone me before you set off. There is no need for you to take anything. I’ll prepare everything for you.

I am looking forward to seeing you soon.

Yours,

Zhang Ying

January 12th, 2002

Dear Mr. President,

January 12th, 2002

Dear Mr. President,

I'm very lucky to attend this world-famous university, but I'm afraid I'm not content with the canteen service on campus.

Firstly, the quality of the dishes should be improved. Undoubtedly, there are a lot of delicious dishes, but all the year, they are the same. More and more students are complaining about eating the same food each day. So I think the most urgent problem is variety.

Secondly, the price is a bit too high. Many of us hope that the canteen can provide us with not only delicious but also cheaper food.

Finally, the environment is so noisy that we can't enjoy our meals in good mood. I suggest that there be some soft music to help us relax.

Those presented suggestions are not just of my own, but also of many other students. We hope our respectable president will pay attention to our suggestions.

By the way, the canteen workers are very patient and always smiling. So I think if our university offers them better conditions, they will offer us better service.

Best wishes,

Yours sincerely,

Li Ming

30 minutes to write A Letter to the Editor of a Newspaper complaining about the poor service of a bookstore. Write at least 150 words according to the guidelines given below in Chinese.

June 19, 2004

Dear Editor,

I am writing this letter to reflect some problems I came across recently and appeal to the improvement of the service industry.

This weekend I bought an English-Chinese

dictionary in a bookstore near my home since its cover is elaborately designed. But when I went home and read carefully, I found that the several pages of the dictionary have been cracked and befouled. What is worse, the misprints spread everywhere in the

dictionary and seriously affect my comprehension. Since there was such damage and misprint to the

dictionary, I went to the bookstore to require for a replace. But to my surprise, the staff of the bookstore turned down my request rudely and even denied the poor quality of the dictionary.

It goes without saying that today’s

face-paced and market-oriented economy calls for much higher standard for service industry.

However, to my regret, many of the commercials fail to achieve this standard and the quality of the staff needs to be improved. It’s self-evident that the poor quality of

practitioners in the service industry will not only deeply disappoint customers but also hamper the development of our country’s economy. As a

result, I expect your newspaper to appeal to the service industry to attach more importance to the service improvement.

Thank you for your attention!

Sincerely yours,

A Letter of Congratulation

This is Teachers‟ Day and a time to be grateful to all teachers. This profession deserves the special recognition and respect. There is no more appropriate time than this to honour you and others in your chosen field. You have my eternal gratefulness. Have a happy Teachers‟ Day. The whole secret of the teacher‟s force lies in the conviction that men are convertible. Teacher, who educate children, deserve more honor than parents, who merely gave them birth; for

the latter provided more life, while the former ensure a good life. What sculpture is to a block of marble, education is to the soule.

My heartfelt thanks to you, dear teacher. On the voyage of life, you have kindled the light of hope for me. What you have done enriches my mind and broadens my view. On this day I honour you sincerely. No one deserves a bigger thank you than you. One day is hardly enough to show our gratitude.

National Teacher Day is always the Tuesday of the first full week of May. And it is always for our students to give our special thanks to our lovely teacher.

I still remember last year when I was feeling lost, down and out,I had no idea about about my life,my love,my study even doubt why I was here in the world. So then came so much wine ang smoke,I was tired, physical and mental.I even wanted to end my life just jumping from the top of our buliding.

Then my teacher came to me, she said she knew what I was afraid of, she aslo told me that‟s very common like many yong people of my age. She told me to call her anytime I need her help.I did so ,we often chat ems and made some phone call.I just can‟t remember when come the mirical.I have found myself now!

Another teacher‟s day,to all the teachers,to our parents.

The Once per year ‟s Teacher‟s Day will come soon. At first, I will extend the greeting of festival to my teacher.

Last week, I suddenly had a stomachache terribly in the school. My teacher was very worried, sent me to the hospital in a hurry. After checking , doctor verified that I have got the acute enteritis. My teacher came with me all the night in the hospital, so kind as to look after me. My teacher fed me food and medicine on time. After struggling with the serious illness in one days and one nights, I left hospital. Then my teacher helps me to make up a missed lesson of English in a few days in succession.

I express gratitude to my teacher, I can‟t recover so fast without my teacher. Because of my teacher I can participate today‟s CETD. I want to repay my teacher. No present can express my grateful feeling to my teacher. And the best repayment is that I can pass the CETD this time.

A Letter Declining a Job Offer

Dear president:

I am a person who had attended your company's interview last week. I am glad to have got a call from your company that noticed me to go to work tomorrow.

However, Since the job your company offered for me is translator, I consider that the job does not suit me. At first, my major in college was Journalism, so I have concentrated on my major during my four year's college life. English is only an amateurish interest of mine, Therefore, the time I have spent on English in the campus was quite few. Perhaps the interviewer of your company overestimated my ability on English, in effect, my English is not good enough to be capable of the job .Most importantly, to be a translator is not my goal, I wish to become an excellent journalist since I was in the elementary school.

I am so sorry to reject the job your company offered for me and I think that other people are more suitable than me to seize the job. At last, I would like to give my best wishes to your company.

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am very grateful to have received the letter from your company informing my acceptance as your clerk. Thank you very much for your kind offer of this precious opportunity!

However, I have to say sorry for not being able to accept it. There are at least two personal reasons. Firstly, I feel I can't adapt myself to working in a company. My introvert personality makes me not quite good at dealing with business and people. Secondly, also the most important one is that I have passed the examination to graduate school and been accepted as a graduate student by Beijing University, so I decided to pursue further study to learn more. Therefore, after a careful consideration, I am regretful to tell you that I can not accept your offer.

Above all, I still want to express my deep appreciation for your job offer. Thanks for the efforts you have made in processing my application. Also your kind understanding is highly appreciated.

I believe this position will better fit my research interests and my future goal to apply to law schools in that region. This has been a difficult decision for me, but I believe it is the appropriate one for my career at this time. In addition, I sincerely hope that my decision won't cause inconvenience for you.

** A letter Decling a Job Offer

Dec. 24th

Dear Managers,

I am very grateful for you to give me another job in the company. Thinking about the good opportunity you offer to me each time, I am really moved. What words should I say? It seems that words on this special occasion fail to express me. All in all, I just want to say "many many thanks for all your kindness and consideration."

However , I can not accept the job you offer to me. I think, there are at least three personal reasons for this. First, I can not make full use of my major which I learned at college, though you pay much attention to me. Second, I have a habit to challenge myself . If a job or learning seems to lose the meaning of challenge, I will have to quit and find a challenging one for me. Third, I am not used to working in the same place for a long time. I want to have more working experiences and know a lot of different people. Therefore, I can not accept your offer .

Above all, I also want to express my deep appreciation of your understanding of my decision. I think there are other qualified personnel in our company who you should give a chance. If each potential employee in our company can have a chance to prove themselves for our company, I think, the company will become a more and more competitive company and will become more and more popular because of our smart strategy in employing qualified workers. I wish the bright future for our company.

Best wishes for you all !

Yours sincerely,

Tom

A Letter to a Roommate

March 16, 2002

Dear Xiao Zhang,

March 16, 2002Dear Xiao Zhang, Recently I have noticed that you have been smoking heavily, which is becoming a serious problem. As long as you are in, our bedroom is filled with that terrible smell. The ashtray always overflows with cigarette butts.

Your are ruining your health, destroying brain cells which can never be replaced, not to mention the damage to your lungs and windpipes. Smoking, especially heavy smoking, correlates highly with lung cancer. It is possible that you'll be caught up with it. I'm not scaring you. Besides, smoking is also harmful to the health of our roommates and the friendship among us. The roommates avoid being in the bedroom for fear of being polluted. As a result, the brotherhood among roommates is gradually fading.

If I were you, I would try to get rid of the bad habit. It is not difficult to break away from it if you are really determined to quit. Remember 'Where there is a will, there is a way'. I will always be there to help, if you need.

Yours sincerely,

Xiao Li

A Letter of Complaint

A Letter of Complaint

Dear Sir or Madam,

A few months ago I purchased a washing machine (Sanyo XQB50-68) produced by your factory. After a few weeks I found that it had seriously damaged the clothes. I asked you to change one for me, which you did. Now I want to ask you to change this one for me again.

This one does not damage my clothes any more, but I have found that it tangles the clothes seriously and when it automatically begins to spin the water out, the machine shakes so heavily that it stops by itself. In the instruction booklet you have not mentioned this defect and neither have you told the user how to solve the problem. I am quite annoyed by the fact that sometimes when I came back from work to take the clothes out to dry, they were still unwashed. When I am at home, I have to tend it frequently in untwist the entangled clothes. Is that what you call you machine “fully automatic”?

Please change a new one for me that will not entangle the clothes. Otherwise, I would ask you to give my money back, or I would complain to the Consumer’s Association.

Yours sincerely

When I think of those gorgeous places of scenic beauty you showed me around, I couldn’t be more delighted. And the pineapple pie Grandma prepared for me is out of this world. I had never had so delicious food! Indeed, I am still missing your snug log-cabin, small and cozy, which was turned into my dream house in fairy land those nights.

Would you come to Harbin, my home town, some time this summer vacation? Harbin, a beautiful place frequently referred to as Oriental Paris, offers a picture of another kind. I can assure you another pleasant tour. My family and I cannot wait to see

you here.

Yours,

Li Ming

September, 11

Dear President,

I am a sophomore with the Department of Law. My name is Wang Ming. I am writing to you today to intimate you with something undesirable that I have found in the University Library.

You may or may not realize how much our library, the landmark of our university or even of our town, weighs in our minds. It is a place we are most proud of and where we like to spend most of our time. In such an honorable place we have noticed recently

some phenomena which hurt our eye. Some seats in the reading rooms are ‘permanently reserved vacant seats’, that is, some students “occupy” some seats they never come to use. What a terrible waste of valuable resource! Some other students are too noisy, talking among themselves, leaving mobile phone beeping anytime. And some library staff is ill-mannered and rude and not helpful most of time. These and other undesirable things have already done damage to the fame of our university and caused a lot of inconvenience to the users.

Dear President, we hope that something can be done to change and reverse the current situation. Let our cozy, comfortable, quiet, effective library come back.

Best wishes
