Qi Baishi (1863-1957) was one of China’s greatest painters. He was born in a farmer’s family in Xiangtan, Hunan province. He had only studied in a private school from his grandfather before he was twelve. .He worked as a carver when young. Between 1902 and 1909, he traveled across the country and painted many landscapes. His interest changed later to simple things from everyday life, such as vegetables, flowers, birds and insects. Cabbage is a well-known example of his work. The little insect in the picture fixed its eyes on the cabbage, which shows its interest in the cabbage. Qi Baishi’s paintings often leave the audience thinking of something.

Last week, we had a debate about whether we should develop car industry. During the debate, Group A argued we should develop cars, as they could bring great convenience to people, create more jobs and thus greatly strengthen economy. Group

B, however, thought the government should limit the number of cars, since most roads are too crowded. Too many cars, they said, would certainly cause traffic jams. Besides, cars would send off a large amount of waste gas, which leads to air pollution. They believed that public transportation, such as buses and subways, should greatly be encouraged.

As we know, eyes are windows of the soul. Everyone understands the importance of the eyes. But now more and more students are getting nearsighted. So let me give you some advice on how to protect your eyesight.

You shouldn’t keep your eyes working for a long time. When reading you should keep the book about a foot away from you. You ought to remember not to read in a dim corner or in the sun. Don’t read in a moving bus or in bed. Doing eye -exercises everyday can be helpful as well.
