Mom noticed that something was wrong when I started getting so thirsty. I’d have a lot to drink before bed, which was unusual for me. One time, I opened a big container of apple juice and kept refilling my glass. Before I knew it, I’d drunk the entire container! My mom called my doctor. I then had a few blood tests, and the results were certain — I had diabetes (糖尿病), which meant that the amount of sugar in my blood was very high. That can be dangerous, so I had to learn how to control my blood?鄄sugar level.

My eating habits had to change in a big way. With diabetes, I can’t eat a lot of sugar or carbohydrates (碳水化合物). I have to figure out exactly how much sugar I plan to eat, and then I get an injection of insulin (注射胰岛素) before the meal to help my body process the food. Also, I test my blood?鄄sugar level often. I’m always trying to keep my blood sugar at a healthy level. The level can drop when I exercise, but that doesn’t keep me out of gym class or off the basketball court — I just keep some juice boxes around to boost my blood sugar if I need to.

It’s a lot of work — and not a lot of fun — to keep track of everything, but I’ve gotten used to my new habits. I was a little scared at first because I wasn’t sure how my life would change. Once I knew what I needed to do, though, it wasn’t a big deal. My life is different now from what it was before, but it has become completely regular to me.

The English translations of the names of traditional Chinese dishes on menus across the country have caused public discussion about the precision (准确) of the translations.

Since more and more foreigners come to China every day, many restaurants around China are providing English translations of their menus. They want to make it easier for foreign visitors to order Chinese dishes when they travel. Some restaurants also hope that the translations will increase foreigners’ knowledge of Chinese cuisine (烹饪).

But an article in China Youth Daily says the English menu translations have not lived up to public expectations. It argues most of the English names of Chinese dishes lack the cultural meaning and attraction of the dishes they describe. Instead, the translations only provide a list of each dish’s ingredients, the article notes. For example, one Engli sh name of a Chinese dish appears as “Stir-fried mutton slices with Chinese onion or green scallion (葱爆羊肉)”.

Because the English translation focuses only on the ingredients, the author says it fails to describe the dish’s rich cultural meaning and charm. The dish’s beautiful Chinese name, “Fo Tiao Qiang,” has a story behind it. Buddhist monks (和尚) are required to eat vegetables only, but they cannot resist (忍住) the delicious dish. So, they jump over their temple walls to get a taste of the dish.

The article suggests that translators provide more beautiful English translations of the names of Chinese dishes. It also notes a more vivid (生动的) English translation is very important to provide international visitors with a better understanding of Chinese cuisine.

5. Why do many restaurants provide English translations of their menus?

A. Because they want to show their dishes’ ingredients.

B. Because the public expect them to do so.

C. Because Chinese dishes are popular across the world.

D. Because it is a convenience for foreign travelers.

6. According to China Youth Daily, what’s the main problem of the English menu translations?

A. They are too long to remember. B. Many of them are not correct.

C. They lack cultural meaning. D. They are too difficult to understand.

7. What would be the best title for this text?

A. Measures to attract customers B. Ways to translate Chinese menus

C. Better menu translations are needed D. Are English menu translations necessary?

Free energy is everywhere around us. There are many ways to make and collect energy from various sources like sun, wind and water. People also realize that everyday stuff can be a source of energy too. For example, riding a bike, running or just walking, etc. We simply have to change our way of thinking if we want to change the world.

So comes the idea of solar roadways. Are they the road of future? Why use roads just for driving and collecting tolls (过路费)? Why don’t we use them for collecting energy?

The US Department of Transportation recently awarded $100,000 to Solar Roadways to build the first ever Solar Road Panel. So how do these future roads work?

The Solar Road Panels will contain embedded (嵌入的) LEDs which “paint” the road lines from beneath to provide safer nighttime driving as well as to give drivers instant instructions such as detour (绕行) ahead. The road will be able to sense wildlife on the road and can warn drivers to “slow down”. There will also be embedded heating elements in the surface to prevent snow and ice buildup, providing safer winter driving.

Replacing asphalt (沥青) roads and parking lots with Solar Roadway Panels will be a major step toward stopping climate change. Fully electric vehicles will be able to recharge along the roadway and in parking lots, finally making electric cars practical for long trips.

We just can’t wait to see more of these roads all over the world in the near future.

8. The first paragraph serves as a(n) _____.

A. argument B.comment C. explanation D. background

9. When some animals are on the solar road, what will the road do?

A. Guide them to a safer place. B. Remind drivers to drive slowly.

C. Frighten them away from the road. D. Advise drivers to choose another way.

10. From the text, we can know that the Solar Road Panels can _____.

A. provide heat for drivers in winter B. guide drivers who get lost on the highway

C. melt snow and ice soon in winter D. help drivers see the road clearly in the sun

11. What is the text mainly about?

A. Functions of the road in the future. B. Development of solar energy.

C. Free energy on the road. D. Solar road of the future.

Dear Parents,

Now that it has been a week since school began, I hope that you and your child are settled and comfortable in the arrangement of the new school year. I would like to take this opportunity to give you news about the art project that the eighth grade students and I will be working on during this unit.

My name is Molly Atkinson and I am a new middle school teacher here at MSAE in Kauai. I feel that it is important for you to know that my approach to classroom management is inspired by Maharishi’s Principle of Ideal Teaching. I believe that it is the most positive method for guidin g our students’ education. I also believe that by keeping the lessons interesting, the classroom will be a creative environment for the students to explore the artistic process. My experience with the class this week makes me believe that the students and I will have a fruitful and caring experience in our time together.

The students’ first project is a three-part work that begins with the creation of a collage (拼贴画). A pencil drawing of the collage will follow. The third part of the project will be a geometrical three-dimensional (几何三维的) drawing of the collage. The students have jumped right into the project with enthusiasm (热情) and focus. I can tell that we are going to have a very productive unit.

On October 30th, the students will have a showing of their work for you. I look forward to meeting all of you that day. If you would like to get hold of me before that time I will be here after school until 4:30 on Mondays and Wednesdays and can be available on other afternoons by appointment (预约). I may also be reached at my e-mail address: matkinson@kdsi.net. I am very happy to be here and look forward to working with the eighth grade students.

Sincerely,

Molly Atkinson
