Last week my youngest son and I visited my father at his new home in Tucson, Arizona.

He moved there a few years ago, and I was eager to see his new place and meet his friends.

My earliest memories of my father are of a tall, handsome, successful man devoted to his work and family, but uncomfortable with his children. As a child I loved him; as a school girl and young adult I feared him and felt bitter about him. He seemed unhappy with me unless I got straight A’s and unhappy with my boyfriends if their fathers were not as “successful ”as he was.

Whenever I went out with him on weekends, I used to struggle to think

On the first day of my visit, we went out with one of my father’s friends for lunch at an outdoor cafe. Who was this person I knew as my father, who seemed so friendly and interesting be around? What had held him back before?

The next day my dad pulled out his childhood pictures and told me quite a few stories about his own childhood. More than 10 years ago, it was difficult to buy a tasty pineapple. The fruits that made it to the UK were green on the outside and, more often than not, hard with an unpleasant taste within. Then in 1996, the Del Monte Gold pineapple produced in Hawaii first hit our shelves.

The new type of pineapple looked more yellowy-gold than green. It was slightly softer on the outside and had a lot of juice inside. But the most important thing about this new type of pineapple was that it was twice as sweet as the hit-and –miss pineapples we had known. In

no time, the Del Monte Gold took the market by storm, rapidly becoming the world’s best -selling pineapple variety, and delivering natural levels of sweetness in the mouth, up until then only found in tinned pineapple.

In nutrition (营养) it was all good news too. This nice-tasting pineapple contained four times more vitamin C(维生素C)than the old green variety. Nutritionists said that it was not only full of vitamins, but

also good against some diseases. People were understandably eager to be able to buy this wonderful fruit. The new type of pineapple was selling fast, and the Del Monte Gold pineapple rapidly became a in the shopping basket of the healthy eater.

Seeing the growing market for its winning pineapple, Del Monte tried to keep the market to itself. Do’s and Don’ts in Whale(鲸)Watching

The Department of Fisheries and Oceans has developed guidelines for whale watching in Johnstone Strait, where killer whales are found on a daily basis each summer. It is strongly recommended that vessel(船只)operators follow these guidelines for all kinds of whales.

● Approach whales from the side, not from the front or the back. ● Approach no closer than 100 metres, then stop the boat but keep the engine on.

● Keep noise levels down-no horns, whistles or racing of engines. ● Start your boat only after the whales are more than 100 metres

from your vessel.

● Leave the area slowly, gradually moving faster when you are more than 300 metres from the whales.

● Approach and leave slowly, avoiding sudden changes in speed or direction.

● Avoid disturbing groups of resting whales.

● Keep at low speeds and remain in the same direction if travelling side by side with whales.

● When whales are travelling close to shore, avoid crowding them near the shore or coming between the whales and the shore.

● Limit the time spent with any group of whales to less than 30 minutes at a time when within 100 to 200 metres of whales.

All of this was about more than convenience. There existed a close relationship between families and their milkmen. Mr. Basille even had a key to our house, for those times when it was so cold outside that we put the box indoors, so that the milk wouldn't freeze. And I remember Mr. Basille from time to time taking a break at our kitchen table, having a

cup of tea and telling stories about his delivery.

There is sadly no home milk delivery today. Big companies allowed the production of cheaper milk thus making it difficult for milkmen to compete (竞争). Besides, milk is for sale everywhere, and it may just not have been practiced to have a delivery service.

Recently, an old milk box in the countryside I saw brought back my childhood memories. 1 took it home and planted it on the back porch (门廊). Every so often my son's friends will ask what it is. So I start telling stories of my boyhood, and of the milkman who brought us friendship along with his milk.

B. to pay for the delivery D. to please his mother

57. What can be inferred from the fact that the milkman had the key to the boy's house?

A. He wanted to have tea there. C. He was treated as a family member.

B. He was a respectable person. D. He was fully trusted by the family.

58. Why does home milk delivery no longer exist?

A. Nobody wants to be a milkman now. C. Its service is getting poor.

B. It has been driven out of the market. D. It is forbidden by law.

59. Why did the author bring back home an old milk box?

A. He missed the good old days. C. He needed it for his milk

bottles.

B. He wanted to tell interesting stories. D. He planted flowers in it.

While small may be beautiful ,tall is just plain uncomfortable it seems ,particularly when it comes to staying in hotels and eating in restaurants.

The Tall Persons Club Great Britain(TPCGB),which was formed six months ago to campaign(发起运动)for the needs of the tall .has turned its attention to hotels and restaurants Beds that are too small, shower heads that are too low ,and restaurant tables with hardly any leg-room all make life difficult for those of above average height it says. But it is not just the extra-tail whose needs are not being met. The average height of the

population has been increasing yet the standard size of beds, doorways ,and chairs has remained unchanged

―The bedding industry says a bed should be six inches larger than the person using it ,so even a king-size bed at 6'6"(6feet and 6 inches) is falling short for 25%of men, while the standard 6'3" bed caters for(满足需要)less than half of the male(男性)population ,"said TPCGB president Phil Heinricy ,"Seven-foot beds would work fine."

Similarly ,restaurant tables can cause no end of problems Small tables ,which mean the long-legged have to sit a foot or so away from

them are enough to make tall customers go elsewhere

Some have already taken note ,however At Queens Moat Houses’Caledonian Hotel in

Edinburgh .6'6" beds are now put in as standard after requests for longer beds from taller visitors, particularly Americans.

60. What is the purpose of the TPCGB campaign?

A. To provide better services C. To draw public attention to the needs of the tall

B. To rebuild hotels and restaurantsD. To attract more people to become its members

61. Which of the following might be a bed of proper length according to Phil Heirtricy?

A .7' 2' ' B. 7' C. 6' 6' ' D . 6' 3' '

62. What may happen to restaurants with small tables?

A .They may lose some customers C .They have to find easy chairs to match the tables

B. They may start businesses elsewhere D .They have to provide enough space for the long—legged

63. What change has already been made in a hotel in Edinburgh?

A .Tall people pay more for larger beds C. Special rooms are kept for Americans

B. 6' 6' ' beds have taken the place of 6' 3' ' beds D. Guest

rooms are standardized

Cassandra Feeley finds it hard to manage on her husband’s income. So this year she did something more than a hobby: She planted vegetables in her yard. For her first garden, Ms. Feeley has put in 15 tomato plants, and five rows of a variety of vegetables. The family’s old farm house has Rita Gartin kept a small garden. This year she has made it much larger because, she said, ― The cost of everything is going up and I was looking to lose a few pounds, too; so it’s a win-win situation all around .‖

They are among the growing number of Americans who, driven by higher living costs and a falling economy (经济), have taken up vegetables gardening for the first time. Others have increased the size of their existing gardens. Seed companies and garden shops say not since the 1970s has there been such an increase in interest in growing food at home. Now many gardens across the country have been sold out for several months. In Austin, Tex, some of the gardens have a three-year waiting list.

George C. Ball Jr., owner of a company, said sales of vegetables seeds and plants are up by 40% over last year , double the average growth of the last five years. Mr. Ball argues that some of the reasons have been building for the last few years. The big one is the striking rise in the cost

of food like bread and milk, together with the increases in the price of fruits and vegetables. Food prices have increased because of higher oil prices. People are now driving less, taking fewer vacations, so there is more time to garden.

64. What does the word ― residents‖ in Paragraph 1 probably refer to ?.

A. chickens B. tomatoes C. gardens D. people

65. Why is vegetable gardening becoming increasingly popular?

A. More Americans are doing it for fun C. There ’s a growing need for fruits.

B. The price of oil is lower than before D. The cost of living is on the rise

66. Which of the following might be the best title for the text?

A. Family Food Planning C. Banking on Gardening

B. A Belt-tightening Move D. Gardening as a Hobby

根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项.

Money Matters

Parents should help their children understand money. So you may start talking

about money when your child shows an interest in buying things, candy or toys, for example.

1. The basic function of money

Begin explaining the basic function of money by showing how people trade money for goods

Or services. It is important to show your child how money is traded for the things he wants to have.

If he wants to have a toy, give him the money and let him hand the money to the cashier(收银员).

When your child grows a bit older and understands the basic function of money, you

can start explaining more complex ways of using money.

2. Money lessons

Approach money lessons with openness and honesty. If you must say no to a child’s request to spend money, explain, ― You have enough toy trucks for now. ‖ Or, if the request is for many different things, say, ― Y ou have to make a choice between this toy and that toy. ‖

3.

Begin at the grocery store. Pick out two similar brands of a product--- a name-brand butter and a generic (无商标产品) ,for example. You can show your child how to make choices between different brands of a product so that you can save money. If he chooses the chooses the cheaper brand, allow him to make another purchase with the money saved. Later, you may explain how the more expensive choice leaves less money for other purchases.

A. Wise decisions B. The value of money C. Permit the child to choose between them.

D. Tell your child why he can –or cannot --- have certain things.

E. Ask yourself what things that cost money are most important to you F. Talk about how the money bought the thing after you leave the toy store.

G. The best time to teach a child anything about money is when he shows an interest.

范文

Dear Sir/Madam,

I ’m writing to you to complain about the quality of a green coat which I bought in your shop while I was on holiday in Hong Kong about a week ago. I bought it for 300 yuan in your shop, but there seems to be something wrong with it.

When it is washed, the color faded away. Now I can ’t wear it. It’s not my fault, so I’d like you to solve the problem for me. I insist you change it for another one for me or give me my money back. I think it’s better for you to make sure that everything in your shop is good. Then you will have more customers.

I ’m looking forward to your early reply.

Y ours truly,

Li Hong
