第二节:读写任务:

阅读下面的短文,然后按照要求写一篇150词左右的英语短文 Health or Wealth?

Which is more important, health or wealth? When given this question, different people have various answers. Some insist that health plays a more important role in our life, while others see more advantages arising from wealth.

The first group of people quote the old saying ―Health is above wealth‖ to prove their idea. They argue that, on one hand, a strong person can do almost anything as long as he/she tries hard. On the other hand, however, rich people will not be able to enjoy the wealth if their days are numbered.

In contrast, the advocates of wealth have such arguments as follows. For one thing, wealthy people will be able to buy more healthy foods. For another, they can enjoy better facilities to improve their health. Take my neighbor, as

an example. He had a heart attack and is in hospital. However, he cannot afford the expensive operation, which costs as much as 100,000 yuan. Therefore, he has to lie in bed hopelessly. If he were a rich man, his life could be saved. As far as I am concerned, both health and wealth are important to our life. We should try to strike a balance between them and gain wealth with a healthy body.

Growing up to Be Independent

Growing up is not always easy. When facing difficulties, courage and a spirit of independence can be more useful than crying for help. That‘s what Hong Zhanhui‘s story of growing from boy to man with family hardships tells us.

Hong who was born in 1982 in a poor family in Xihua County, Henna Province is now a hero in people‘s mind.

When he was only 11, his father became mentally ill and one day came back with an abandoned baby girl. A year later, Hong‘s mother and younger brother both left home because of poverty and pressure from his ill father. Their burdens fell onto the 12-year-old‘s shoulders: to treat his father‘s illness, bring up the adopted sister Chenchen, and to go on to study. Hong didn‘t give up. Since a young age, he has worked in part – time jobs to feed his family. At the same time, he has studied at college. To take care of Chenchen, he worked hard to rent a room near his campus for her, and send her to school. After Hong‘s story went public, people were moved to tears by his unselfishness. Hard as his life was, Hong didn‘t abandon his father and the adopted sister, because they needed his help. With his hard - won money, he even aided other students struggling against misfortunes.

Hong‘s story shows that with love and willpower, no hardship can defeat a person but himself. So when facing difficulties, don‘t complain about bad luck. Consider what more you could do for your family and society and you‘ll find the world smiling back.

第二节 读写任务

阅读下面的短文,然后按照要求写一篇150词左右的英语短文。

In our life, we have rarely expressed our gratitude to the one who has lived those years with us. In fact, we don‘t have to wait for anniversaries to thank the ones closest to us—the ones so easily overlooked. If I have learned anything about giving thanks, it is this: give it now! While your feeling of appreciation is alive and sincere, act on it. Saying thanks or do something in return for the love and care you receive is such an easy way to add to the world‘s happiness.

Of course, there are times when you can‘t express gratitude immediately. In that case don‘t let embarrassment sink you into silence-speak up the first time you have the chance.

Once a young minister, Mark Brian, was sent to a remote parish of Kwakiut Indians in British Columbia. The Indians, he had been told, did not have a word for ―thank you‖. But Brian soon found that these people had exceptional generosity. Instead of saying thanks, it is their custom to return every favor with a favor of their own, and every kindness with an equal or superior kindness. They do their thanks.

Thankfulness sets a chain reaction that transforms people all around us —including ourselves. For no one ever misunderstands the melody of a grateful heart. Its message is universal; its music touches the heavens.

Students should think now about why they'd like to participate in extracurricular (课外的) activities. Participating in extracurricular activities may help you deepen your physical, creative, social, political, and career interests by bringing you into communication with other like-minded people you didn‘t previously know.

You can join groups as a way to get support from other students. A club or group can also be a great way to meet people who are different from you. Lots of youth programs bring people together with those who are different as a way to break down the barriers between people.

Participating in extracurricular activities helps you in other ways, too. It looks good on college and job applications and shows admissions officers and employers you're well-rounded and responsible. Specific activities help with specific goals.

The most basic reason for joining a club or team is that it gives you something better to do than staring at the wall, wandering the hall, or sleeping all afternoon. People who are participating are less likely to pick up bad habits, like smoking or drinking.

Our environment is getting worse and worse with the increase of the world population, which affects the environment in two ways. Firstly, the limited energy resources will be used up much faster. Secondly, the increasing population creates more pollution, another severe problem that needs to be solved. Both problems are long-term ones because actions taken now show their results slowly over many years. They are also urgent because delays in action can lead to great suffering and social problems. The question seems to be difficult to handle for most people. However, a person can be a protector of environment in everyday life if he takes action to save the environment right now. With the development of technology , cars make transportation easier and quicker than before, but we can‘t ignore the disadvantages brought to us by more and more cars in use. For instance, we are using petrol and will soon be gone. What‘s more, the exhausted gas from cars pollutes our air, and our health is ther efore threatened by air pollution, which has a big potential effect on our daily life. So we can think of walking, taking buses instead of driving cars alone. This seems to be a very slow process that can‘t be so effective if it‘s taken by a single person. But when more and more people become aware of the importance and positively take it as their personal responsibilities,

the condition of the air will be improved to a great extent.

Last week, the 103-year-old Beijinger, as the only candidate from her residential community, was recommended to a higher authority in Beijing‘s Dongcheng District.

Her whole family had kept their fingers crossed that Cao could become the oldest of the 21,880 torchbearers selected across the world.

―We appreciate Cao‘s wish. But in reality, she won‘t be a torchbearer due to her health condition,‖ Li Hua, director of Jingshan sub-district office, told China Daily.

According to Li, the office has received eight recommendations, but only one of these can be passed to a higher selection body.

She refused to reveal any details about how they made the decision, except for saying ―the one we have finally chosen is a Beijing model worker‖.

Xiao Xinhua, the youngest of Cao‘s four children, felt sad at hearing the news.

However, she didn‘t dare inform Cao as ―it will be a shock to someone who has such a great passion for the Games‖.

Xiao argued her mother has no health problems.

The 103-year-old started exercising in 2004 to get fit enough to be a torchbearer.

―If she were not healthy enough, how could we put her at risk by applying for the position?‖ she asked.

―I personally believe that one centenarian torchbearer is more meaningful than 100 model workers.‖

Shanghai health authorities, which are busy inspecting thousands of restaurants around the city before the lunar New Year's Eve next week, are suggesting diners break with Chinese tradition during the most important holiday of the year.

Health officials are suggesting restaurants serve food on separate dishes to each customer instead of using the traditional method of serving one big dish that everyone can help themselves from.

While many eateries did that last spring during the severe acute respiratory syndrome outbreak to prevent spreading the virus, the practice quickly ended when the disease was brought under control.

"New Year's dinner is a get-together for relatives and friends. Serving separate dishes may destroy the cozy atmosphere," said a manager surnamed Zhu at Shanghai Xinghualou Restaurant on downtown Fuzhou Road.

"We provide such service only if customers ask for it. Normally, we provide public chopsticks and spoons," said Zhu.

A growing number of restaurants are now providing serving spoons and chopsticks, which is more hygienic than allowing everyone to use their own chopsticks and spoons.

"Eating together from a big plate is a tradition for Chinese. Since it is a family party and all the people are relatives, it is awkward to eat from separate dishes," said Zhang Lin, a 42-year-old woman.

(Xinhua)Updated: 2008-02-22 15:16――The country's Ministry of Education on Thursday announced a pilot program to teach students in primary and secondary schools its traditional Peking Opera. Deemed one of the nation's unique cultural treasures, the opera will be added into music courses for 200 schools in 10 provinces, municipalities and autonomous regions throughout China.

The move immediately drew heated reaction from the public. "I support this project wholeheartedly," said Zhu Shihui, a renowned Peking Opera performer. "Interest should be fostered since childhood. I myself began to get fascinated with Peking Opera whilst in primary school. It eventually became my lifetime career," he told Xinhua. The general public, however, are not enthusiastic. Nearly 70 percent of voters were against the project. In another opinion poll by China's leading web portal Sina.com, of over 21,000 respondents, only 27 percent believe setting up the course will help promote traditional Chinese culture. Nearly 38 percent think the course should not be compulsory as students' choices should be respected, and the remaining 35 percent propose different local operas be taught in different areas since China boasts a huge reservoir of local operas.

Jade means a lot in Chinese culture and is highly valued by the Chinese people. Jade bracelets are quite common among Chinese women. Many begin to wear one when they are young till they die, believing that it will bring them good luck. Jade bracelet can easily break and should be treated very carefully. But even if it is broken, it is believed that the pieces can be picked up and save as they can still bring good luck.

When I stop to think about which possession of mine means the most to me, I find myself looking at my left wrist, around which is a simple jade bracelet. And this bracelet will always remind me of my culture and the individual that I am.

I remember very clearly the night my parents gave me the bracelet. It was in my sophomore(二年级) year of high school, and I had stayed out past my curfew(熄灯睡觉时间) at midnight. When I got home that night, my parents gave me a lecture on responsibility. I expected to be placed on restriction, but instead they gave me a jade bracelet. I was totally shocked...but when I went to bed that night I was supremely happy.

The next morning my father told me that because they had gone shopping for the bracelet, he had not gone to the racetrack(赛马场), and had missed out on winning $20,000 because of me. However, he said that I was worth it.

The bracelet will always remind me of those two days and the love that exists in my relationship with my parent, even though nothing is ever said. I know that no matter what I may do, my parents will always love me and accept me the way I am.

Since I got the bracelet, I have not taken it off-mostly because I don't want to, but also because my hand has outgrown the bracelet and therefore it is stuck on permanently. My bracelet means so much to me that if it should ever break, I would be enormously upset. But then, I could always save the pieces for good luck.

October 10, 2008

Dear Editor,

I am writing this letter to reflect some problems I came across recently and appeal to the improvement of the service industry.

This weekend I bought an English- Chinese dictionary in a bookstore near my home since its cover is elaborately designed. But when I went home and read carefully, I found that the several pages of the dictionary have been cracked and befouled. What ‘s worse, the misprints spread everywhere in the dictionary and seriously affect my comprehension. Since there was such damage and misprints to the dictionary, I went to the bookstore to require for a replace. But to my surprise, the staff of the bookstore turns down my request rudely and even denied the poor quality of the dictionary.

Today ‘s fast-paced and market-oriented economy calls for much higher standard for service industry. However, to my regret, many of the commercials fail to achieve this standard and the quality of the staff needs to be improved. It‘s self-evident that the poor quality of practitioners in the service industry will not only deeply disappoint customers but also hamper the development of our country‘s economy. As a result, I expect your newspaper to appeal to the service industry to attach more importance to the service improvement.

Thank you for your attention!

Sincerely yours,

Sam

A recent survey shows that the health of the students in our school has been going from bad to worse in the past three years. The number of students who are short-sighted increased from 78.2% in 2004 to 92.5% in 2007. Overweight students are getting more from 36% to 52.4%. Nearly 10% more students don't have enough sleep and over 15% more students have mentally problems. To be healthier physically and mentally, students need plenty of sleep to refresh themselves.

Different people have different opinions on health and Wealth, while he considers keeping a balance between them most important.

Nowadays more and more people are concerned about their health. But how to keep healthy? Different people may give different answers to this question. In my opinion, it is essential to do the following.

First, it is absolutely necessary to take some exercise every day. Research shows that getting plenty of exercise make the heart beat faster and the lungs work harder. This strengthens the heart, reduces the chance of heart attack, and helps lower blood pressure. That's why more and more people are becoming active in various kinds of sports and exercises. Every morning many people get up early and take much exercise. Some practice shadowboxing and swordplay while others run, jog, walk or dance to music. In the afternoon, there are also many people keen on sports. Some play basketball or volleyball or table tennis, others go in for gymnastics or track events. Through sports and exercise, people become healthier and stronger.

Medical researchers have proved that what people eat affects their health. They advise people to eat more fruit and vegetables and less meat such as beef and pork because meat contains more fat than poultry and fish. Fat can build up in the arteries, block the flow of blood, and cause a heart attack or stroke.

Getting rid of bad habits like smoking and drinking alcohol is also an important way to keep healthy. Smoking and drinking alcohol injure one's health a great deal, and therefore should be given up. Unfortunately few people follow this advice.

If people follow these three ways of keeping fit, they greatly improve their health.

Dear Mr. Hong,

Recently I have read your story in the newspaper that you who was a poor student grow up to be independent by bring up your adopted sister.

It ‘s known to all that a spirit of independence can have a good effect on adolescents. It can push us to learn more and lead us not to give way to difficulties. I have a similar experience as you did. Little child as I was 10 years ago, I was independent so that I went to school on my own. One heavy raining afternoon, I was on my way home

alone though it rained cats and dogs. Despite the rain, I walked so carefully that I wouldn‘t fall to the ground. At last, I went home safely. My parents were so proud of me. After reading your experience, I really want to make friends with you. I hope we can meet someday.

Independence Is Important

Recently HongZhanhui‘s story capture public concern. Hong who was a poor student grow up to be independent by bring up your adopted sister.

There is no doubt that a spirit of independence plays an important role among teenagers. But in fact, many parents just indulge their children so they don‘t realize its importance. A spirit of independence can make teenagers grow up maturely. On one hand, it has a great effect on their life. Once they possess such spirit we won‘t give way to difficulties so easily. It will let us keep on fighting until the final victory belongs to us. On the other hand, with such spirit, they will adjust to the society easily. What Hong did make me realize what we should do when facing difficulties. I do hope everyone can learn from him.

Today I read a story about a religious master and a painter who change themselves when they face something unchangeable and then achieve an eventual change of the world around them.

The stories remind me of my cousin who used to complain about English learning. He though it unnecessary to learn a foreign language and ignored it at all. As a result, he fell behind the others in his class and even failed in the exam. After realizing that it was not only a main subject but also the most widely spoken language in the world, he developed a good attitude. Thanks to his English teacher, he was well involved in English classes. He practiced listening and speaking English after class. What ‘s more, he kept an English diary, which helped him think in English. A year later, he became one of the ten top students in his class. Believe it or not, he was even rewarded in an English contest in his school.

As far as I ‘m concerned, change your attitude when you find the environment unchangeable. Only in this way can you achieve an eventual change of the world around you.

1. The above-mentioned passage conveys the idea that it‘s important to express our gratitude immediately we have the chance and that there are various kinds of way to do it.

I can‘t agree more with the author about his opinion that we are supposed to express our gratitude in return for the love and care we receive in no time. Not only can thankfulness strengthen the harmonious relationship around us, but also add to our sense of happiness.

As to me, I owe great thanks to my dear parents, who always accompany me and encourage me to overcome the hardship I come across. Whenever I am cast down, they always listen to me with patience and cheer me up. However, I just kept the feeling of appreciation at the bottom of my heart instead of giving thanks to them. I would love to seize this opportunity to send my thanks to my dear parents, ― Mum and Dad, without your care and encouragement, I could not grow as healthy and strong as I am now. Thank you for everything you‘ve done for me.‖

Don‘t hesitate to express yo ur gratitude to whoever deserves it. No matter how you express, giving hearty thanks will make a beautiful world.

2.

Expressing Gratitude

We can know from the above-mentioned passage that it‘s important to express our gratitude immediately we have the chance and that there are various kinds of way to do it.

As far as I‘m concerned, I consider it necessary to express our gratitude each time we receive help. For one thing, only by doing something beneficial to those who have been kind to us can we thank them enough. For another, expressing our gratitude is of great help to keep friendly relationship between people, which is essential to harmonious society.

There‘s no doubt that words are a good way to express our gratitude. However, there is something else that we can do to thank those who have given us a hand. As the saying goes, action speaks louder than words. We may thank others in actions, such as helping them in return, rather than only in words.

As for myself, to show my grateful heart, I usually design a ―Thank You‖ card, since I‘m good at designing, and surely I‘ll spare no efforts to help them out when they meet difficulties.

Work while work, play while play

The author discussed the benefits of extracurricular activities including being a way to improve students‘ health, widen their social circle and introduce them to new ideas and people.

As far as I am concerned, students should take part in after-school activities. It is of great importance for the students to do some sports or enjoy some entertainment so as to strengthen our body or relax our nerves. We students would like to have ball games because it can help us know how to cooperate with others. Moreover, playing ball games can also make our life colorful. So it is high time for the school to provide more extracurricular activities.

However, we should also keep the balance between extracurricular activities and study. That is because if we play too much, we would neglect our study. In a word, we should work while you work; play while you play.

2.

My favourite extracurricular activities

The author discusses the benefits of extracurricular activities including bei ng a way to improve students‘ health,

widen their social circle and introduce them to new ideas and people.

I like a variety of activities after school, from active and wild ones like camping, sports and parties to quiet ones like reading and watching TV. I like to be outdoors, to participate in sports and to do daring things. For example, several friends and I once took a trip down a wild river in a raft. We spent a week navigating dangerous currents, camping at night, fixing our own meals and having much fun.

I also like to be with my friends. I usually share my happiness and sadness with my friends. Whenever I have a chance, I either eat out or go shopping with my friends. What a pity! As a Senior Three student, I am too busy to have enough time to stay with my friends.

There are also many quiet private things that I enjoy doing. I can spend whole days reading or doing homework. Sometimes, I like to spend a relaxed evening watching light TV programs, or talking with friends about serious matters over a cup of tea. In other words, I like to do different things, depending on the mood I am in and the kind of people I am around.

“Work while work, play while play.‖ I always tell myself. Join me and enjoy our colourful life, will you?

Environment Protection

At present, more and more people use cars, and this creates serious environment pollution which is harmful to our health. If more and more people become aware of the serious condition and take action, the condition of the air will be improved a lot.

We all know that clean air is important to good health. Unluckily, environment pollution is quite serious, especially in cities. Every year some factories pour millions of tons of smoke into the air. Out on the streets, there are so many private cars sending out waste gases.

Air pollution is much more dangerous than other kinds, so we must take measures to control air pollution. As students ,we ’d better use less plastic bags. We can persuade our relatives or family members who have cars to take the public transportation sometimes. Only when environment pollution is forbidden can we breathe in fresh air and live a healthy life. We should protect our environment on our own and save the earth.

Dear Editor:

I read your report about a 103-year-old Beijinger who is applying to be a torchbearer and who may never see her dream come true although her children have not yet given up hope.

I am writing to share my reflections on the issue with your readers. I hold the view that the chance should be given to this centenarian for the following reasons.

First of all, do we not need people from different age groups to run the torch relay? For her good old age, Cao is a good representative for the senior Chinese who are so enthusiastic about the Olympics. Next, she started to exercise several years ago and health should not be a problem. I also believe no family would risk the life of a centenarian in application if she is not qualified in health. Last, in making her a torchbearer, we not only have a world record of the oldest bearer but also have an excellent model sports lover whose example is there for us to follow.

All in all, I think a 103-year-old woman running the torch relay can tell us a lot more about the Olympic spirit than anything else can. So I do hope she can fulfill her dream.

The Torch Relay

Recently, a 103-year-old Beijinger is so passionate about the 2008 Olympics that she is applying to be a torchbearer. She would become the oldest to run the torch relay if she succeeds.

And what is the torch relay then?

The torch relay, in which the Olympic Flame symbolizes the transmission of Olympic ideals from ancient Greece to the modern world, was introduced as part of the opening ceremony at the 1936 Summer Games in Berlin, Germany. In the relay, the torch is lit in Olympia, Greece, and is carried over several weeks or months from there to the host city by a series of runners. After the last runner who is from the host country lights the Olympic Flame in the main Olympic stadium, the host country‘s head of state declares the Games officially open.

As one of the most splendid of all Olympic ceremonies, the torch relay emphasizes not only the ancient source of the Olympics but also the internationalism of the modern Games.

In my opinion, one should not fancy himself smart.

Hello, everyone. Today I like to share with you a story I read recently. It tells us that although there are all kinds of frustrations in life (man-made and natural), we should never give up. Keep trying and we will eventually find a way through.

Like it or not, we will often meet with frustrations on our journey through life. If we give in, we will never get to our feet again. We should remember this and always be positive to treat each frustration as a chance to rise up and overcome our problems.

We should remember athletes in the 'Special Olympics' (the Paralympics), many with extreme physical and mental handicaps. All their lives they have been fighting against disability with determination to climb out of the ‗hole‘ that fate put them in. Helen Keller is an outstanding example, although she became deaf and blind at the age of 19 months, she struggled all her life to become a great writer and a great woman that inspired generations. Thomas Edison, the Father of Inventions, had no luck with his experiments in light making. He tried hundreds of times before he finally made it. His story certainly proves the saying that failure is the mother of success.

We should understand why there is a rainbow after the rainfall. Frustrations in life are just like the clouds in the sky that allow us to see a beautiful sunset. And I hope one day we all can see that beautiful sunset. Thank you!

Dear Tom,

Recently I heard that you failed in the matriculation exam. Cheer up my friend! Although there are all kinds of frustrations in life (man-made and natural), we should never give up. Keep trying and we will eventually find a

way through..

If you listen to my story, you won‘t complain about your bad luck any more. Here is what happened to my neighbour Lucy. She was once such a lovely and healthy girl that everyone liked her very much. One day as bad luck came, she was diagnosed of brain cancer. We felt depressed by this heart-breaking news. While to our amazement, in face of death, she wasn ‘t depressed and even reassured us that she wouldn ‘t give up even there is little hope. Meanwhile she still kept on studying by herself in the hospital. Now she is still struggling against her fate in the hospital. We all stand by her side and hope she can make it.

Tom, my friend, compared with her, I think, what you met actually is nothing. Like it or not, we will often meet with frustrations on our journey through life. If we give in, we will never get to our feet again. But please remember this : frustrations in life are just like the clouds in the sky that allow us to see a beautiful sunset. I do hope you can get to your feet again and let‘s fight against difficulties together. Looking for your reply.

Yours,

Housework helps to make children feel like an integral part of the family

By allowing children to help out with housework, parents can not only instruct them with basic life skills but also make them feel like an integral part of the family. Christine Field has seen all the benefits.

Indisputably, children who regularly share an adequate portion of housework can learn alongside some fundamental virtues like responsibility, diligence and willpower. Assigned with daily housework, children will be able to keep in mind his own task as a member of his family and therefore, well raise his sense of responsibility. Besides, doing housework itself is the represent of diligence and children will develop the values of hard work. In the long run, this practice will help children understand the ideas of duty and service, which will bring about the ultimate loyal contribution to not only their families, but also their communities, motherland, and the world.

In recognition of the importance of housework for children, parents should actively involve their children in the seemingly simple but beneficial household chores. To this end, it‘s advisable that parents should first make the housework itself interesting by adding to games or entertainments. If applicable, setting small prizes will also be an incentive measure to get children involved in housework and benefit them with long-term virtues.

2.

Time on housework will be rewarding

Being gradually aware of the significance in children‘s involving in housework, parents are changing from a role of overprotection to a more reasonable level of encouraging initiative participation in household chores.

It‘s inspiring and meaningful to see that children are no longer deprived of their rights to develop practical skills in housework, instead, they are given the chances to contribute their shares and are often rewarded with a spiritual fulfillment.

Fortunately, I‘m one of the countless teenagers who have benefited a great deal from this kind of perceptual transition of our parents. I have frequently been encouraged to deal with cooking the meal, sweeping the floor as well as washing dishes since an early age of seven. And I am proud enough to take the responsibility of preparing a good meal when Mom and Dad are delayed by their work. Thanks to their early realization and ever-lasting persistence in the cultivation of my independence, I have grown more skillful and willing to take my share of obligation either at home or at school.

Pushing the children on their way to housework is initial yet effective if parents tend to ensure a promising future

Restaurants in Shanghai remain conservative at the suggestion that foods be served to guests separately, reasoning that this doesn’t agree with the Chinese tradition. Instead, they prefer to provide serving spoons and chopsticks. (33 words)

The report sent me in deep thought. In my family, we usually keep a pair of serving chopsticks for meals. When guests come to dine with us, mum would separate the dishes to different plates before bringing them out to table.

Strange as our way of serving meals to some people, in terms of table manners and hygiene, I think, ours is a smart choice. By using serving chopsticks and separating dishes, we are able to keep our eating environment clean and hygienic, guaranteeing each member‘s health. Moreover, this being a habit for us, we don‘t find it troublesome, and neither does it influence the intimacy of our family or lessen our hospitality in our guests‘ eyes.

To solve the problem of hygiene, people must change their eating habits. Here are some tips for achieving so. First, always wash your hands before eating. Second, be careful when eating traditionally, either at home or out. Only touch the food you want. Last but not least, ask for serving chopsticks or spoons when eating in restaurants.

To conclude, if everyone minds their table manners, a pleasant and hygienic atmosphere can be created.

2.

To guarantee a hygienic lunar New Year, Shanghai health authorities are inspecting and urging restaurants to serve foods separately to guests, which is not eagerly accepted by either restaurants or diners. (31 words)

Unlike what the Shanghai authority required in restaurants, we do not have separate dishes in my family. Instead we still share our dishes together following our tradition. If anyone demands a separate dish, it will be awkward and might hurt family members‘ feelings. So, basically my family‘s eating etiquette is still very traditional. When we have dinner together, we should serve rice or the best food to our grandparents first to show our respect to them. And we are taught not to speak when eating or make annoying sounds when having soup.

Slightly different from the eating etiquettes in my family, when we have meals in a restaurant, we will usually use public chopsticks or spoons to serve food to ourselves to show our respect to guests. Besides, we try not to order too much food and if there is food left, we would pack it and bring it home.

Anyway, no matter what the eating etiquettes are both at home or in public, it is interesting to notice that there is a kind of culture and custom involved. And colorful eating cultures and customs also enrich our traditional culture.

To guarantee a hygienic lunar New Year, Shanghai health authorities are inspecting and urging restaurants to serve foods separately to guests, which is not eagerly accepted by either restaurants or diners. (31 words)

The report reminds me of my dining experience with Tom‘s family.

My parents were away and I had to take care of myself. One day after school, Tom suddenly stopped me on my way to a small fast food restaurant, saying that he had noticed me eat out those days and insisting on taking me home to dine with him. Gratefully, I followed him home.

Tom‘s family, indeed, was very hospitable. For the whole meal, they kept busy working for me. There was no such moment as silence for they talked and laughed even with their mouths full of food. Seeing me just eating from the two plates in front, Tom‘s grandparents, who sat beside me, constantly stood up and conveyed what was described as delicious into my bowl with their own chopsticks.

How embarrassed I was! Seeing their mouth water flying in the air and the food served in my bowl, I didn‘t know whether to eat it or not.

I do support the suggestion of Shanghai health authorities that we break with traditional Chinese table manners especially when dining with strangers because they can sometimes be really unhygienic.

According to the latest news, we know that Peking Opera course for youngsters stirred a lively debate. Some were in favour of the way to promote traditional Chinese culture, while others were against it.

Personally, I disagree with the idea of making Peking Opera a compulsory lesson for students. Peking Opera is too unfamiliar to be accepted in some parts of China, not to mention learning it. Thus, I hold the strong belief that Peking Opera should only be taught in Beijing.

Besides, I still have doubts about the operation of the course. For one thing, will there be enough qualified teachers for the task? It might be challenging for the primary and secondary school music teachers to teach Peking Opera. For the other, there is no need to make it compulsory. Opera courses should be optional. If forced to learn, the students may easily lose interest once they‘re stuck.

There‘s no doubt that China has a diverse culture. It is the typical local operas that should be included into the courses by the local students. I suggest that teachers be asked to not only teach students how to sing and perform but also tell them the storylines and background information so as to help youngsters develop a better understanding and taste about traditional culture.

I disagree with the idea of making Peking opera a compulsory lesson for students nationwide. "Is Beijing roast duck considered a delicacy in every corner of China?" Personally, I hold the strong belief that "Tastes differ from place to place‖. Only in Beijing should Peking Opera be taught as a compulsory course.

In our school, there are more than ten optional courses except compulsory ones, like language and literature, human and society, science, technology, arts, health and physical education as well as integrated practice activities. So students can choose which they love. The class lasts from 3:00pm to 5:00pm on Wednesday afternoons. According to the survey conducted in our school, it is shown that students are extra interested in it since we can learn more and more things out of classes. As far as we know, integrated practical activities and arts are more popular than any other course. We are sure to get chances of doing things by ourselves.

However, all of us hope to have more optional courses, reduce the homework, make visits by school and know more about our society.

The girl was astonished to receive a jade bracelet from her parents instead of being scolded for her fault. She has valued it so much because it always reminds her of the love existing between her and her parents.

As the passage states, love plays an significant role in our life, especially the love between parents and their children. Love from parents enables the child to gain confidence to cope with difficulties, to realize his responsibilities and to become independent.

This passage also reminds me of a similar experience. There was a time when I was under great pressure from study and from relationship between my friends and me. My personality changed. I withdrew from people, becoming

unusually reserved and anxious. My parents, of course, were very concerned, but they spared no effort to comfort me and give me guidance. They took me on a holiday, discussed the problems that I was faced with, told me the stories of their youth and the same problems as they had came across. Eventually their efforts paid off and I got through the hard time. It is my parents‘ deep love that has made me what I am.

Love from parents is like sunshine, making us warm and united.

Dear Tom,

How are you? Things are extremely busy – it always is before the end of the term. I have found a part-time job which you might be interested in. The Dongyuan Strawberry Farm near Huadu needs about 250 people to help with fruit picking. The job takes only 6 hours a day and pays well. We can camp on the farm and go sightseeing after work.

My previous experience proves that doing part-time jobs is more than making money. We can meet numbers of young people from other schools and places as well as learn about the world outside the textbooks and our home.

Last winter vacation I sold toys with several classmates in the Flower Market. Though the market only opened for three days before the Spring Festival, I made friends with several green-hand shopkeepers who were just like me. We had a great time discussing how to attract customers and bargain for the best price.

The job will be so much fun – lots of other students from various places. I hope you‘ll come with me. I promise you won‘t regret it.

Yours sincerely

Encouragement does make a difference

The author described a story that two frogs fell into a deep pit one day. Unfortunately, one of them gave up jumping and died just because he had heard the discouraging words. The author advocates that different words may have different influence on people.

However, the other frog paid no attention to those destructive words and continued to jump. Encouraged by some other frogs who kept telling him not to quit, he jumped harder and harder. Every time he fell down, he struggled to stand on his feet and jumped once again. Finally, his efforts paid off: he made it out. And all the other frogs congratulated on him from the bottom of heart except the former dead frog.

From the story, I sincerely hope every member in the society can help each other because assistance is the focus of life and the source of their happiness and contentment. Meanwhile, we cannot ignore the fact that material assistance and practical one do make a difference, but the mental encouragement plays a more significant role in the people in trouble sometimes.

Mind Your Manners

The passage describes some bad manners of Chinese people and special signs put up in foreign countries to remind Chinese visitors. It also says that our good manners are important to the success of the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing.

As is well known, good manners are the basic quality of man, particularly when we are living in a civilized society. Bad manners always have a bad effect on one‘s work and success.

It is well known that China is an ancient country of civilization and courtesy. However, it is a shame that bad manners can often be seen in our daily life. In our school, some students jump the queue while waiting to get their meals in the dining room. Some spit and litter wherever they are. Some make the walls and desks dirty and ugly by drawing or writing meaningless things on them.

I think it is high time we got rid of these bad habits. Let‘s make every effort to do what we can to help hold the 2008 Olympics and the 2010 Asian Games successfully. Remember: small things make a difference.

2.

Do Be Polite for ourselves, and for our Country

The passage tells us a phenomenon that many foreign countries have put up signs in Chinese to remind Chinese visitors to behave in good manners. What‘s more, the author also indicates that good manners are of great importance to the 2008 Olympic Games.

In my opinion, good manners are not only important to one citizen, but also to the whole country and the nation. I still remember that I once came across a really rude and impolite man. At that time, we were waiting for the same bus and the bus finally came. No sooner had the bus opened its door than he pushed onto it. What ‘s worse, he knocked down an old man and didn‘t even say sorry! It was really rude and even cruel. This incident not only showed how bad manners the man had, but also told us a serious current situation that some of our citizens lack the sense of being polite.

If the situation continues, it will be a fatal problem to our 2008 Olympic Games and the 2010 Asian Games. So for the sake of our country and the two international Games, do be polite and keep good manners all the time.
