The argument of this article is that it makes financial sense to employers that they could pay lower wages to employees by making the workplace safer. The conclusion is under the premise that as physical injury increases, the wages paid to workers should also increase. However, the argument is full of holes and doesn't stand up to the test of logic. For example, the conclusion is based on the condition that the money spent in improving the working environment must exceed the cost because of the hazardous conditions. In addition, the argument relies on the subjective judgment, but ignoring a fact. the fact is not all the

companies which have hazardous work environments would agree with the idea that the wages paid to employees should increase as the risk of physical injury increases.

Firstly, one thing must be taken into consideration is whether it reasonable to spend a large amount money in improving the working conditions in comparison to the cost of payrolls. In this respect, before make the decision to improve the environment, the company management must make a cost benefit analysis. For instance, no companies would agree to cost an lager amount of money on

making the workplace safer compared with lower labor expenses. In other words, the argument makes no sense financially and it will cost more than it saves. Last but not least, this argument presumed that all the working environments could be improved. It must be noted that the argument conveniently ignores the fact that not all the companies could make their work environments much safer, especially those companies which have hazardous work environments. For

example, in the case of coal mining, in which the working environment is hardly to be made safer. Even though some measures can be taken to improve the work

environment, it is only a limited extent, not all the necessary safety measures can be provided when accidents occur. What's more, no matter how the environments are improved, it is difficult to avoid the dangers inherent in nature like the gas leakage and flooding accidents. Just take an example of India coal mines, the number of victims in coaling mining accidents is almost 2000 each year. In my perspective, rather than spending a large amount money in improving the work environment, it is better to strengthen the coal mine workers' job training, reinforce their professional education and improve the welfare conditions.

In conclusion, it seems to make financial sense to make the work environment safer at times. But, it truly does not make financial sense. Before employers make decisions to improve the working environment, all the things must be considered. For example, the overall ability of a company and the possibility to improve the work conditions. Furthermore, the companies which have hazardous work environment should focus on the improvement of workers' job training, professional education and welfare conditions.
