Just be yourself

--A Review of Mona Lisa Smile

This story happened in Wellesley College in 1950s when women liberty prevailed in America. Kathleen, a girl who is graduated from UCLA wanted to be a professor in a university. In order to fulfill her dream, she came to Wellesley College and became a teacher.

Only after one day, Kathleen found that Wellesley College is a campus which was full of gossips, rumors and the university was controlled by backward and feudalism thoughts. The students were have good education background in this school but their education in this school is neither aimed to stimulate their interests in their study nor let them have ambition to their future, the only standard of their achievements is their marriage. The goals of the students’were have a good husband in future. Obviously, Wellesley College was rather an institution to cultivate housewives for upper-class than an institution of higher education The entire current situation of this college shocked Kathleen who had accepted Democratic liberal education thought. She decided to do something and wanted to make a change. She wanted to help those girls who were excellent but have no ideas to their future. However, that was a difficult job. In those girls’ eyes Kathleen was short of understanding to art and her ideas about art are not the orthodox ideas in the college. Her ideas were ridiculous and unacceptable.

Kathleen didn ’t obey the school ’s tradition. She reformed the teaching methods, challenged school rules and inspired students to cultivate their interests and to practice their ideas bravely. She hoped that the girls could have a new concept and their life; she hoped that everyone can have a right to make their own choices. However, her advanced thoughts and methods couldn ’t be accepted by the school leaders, because her behavior had broken their traditions. After discussion, the leaders’ decided that if Kathleen can change her teaching method she can continually be a teacher in this college; if she would not she would be fired. It seemed that Kathleen also has a chance to be teacher in the school, but she gave up the chance, because she just wanted to be herself. In her heart, there would be a place for her but not here, so she chose to leave. Even though Kathleen left the college, it was not mean that she was failed. In the film we can find that those girls were influenced by Kathleen profoundly. Jon didn’t go to Yale for her law study, but that was her own choice; Betty wanted to get away from her failed marriage and asked Kathleen for help. All of these were Kathleen’s success, because she had taught them just to be themselves.

Everyone has a period of time when they don not know how to make a choice. Kathleen told us we should always keep dreams in our hearts, never give up perusing dreams. In particular, we should be ourselves.
