On the last Saturday in March every year, a number of famous cities will turn off lights for one hour. Do you know why? Maybe you have gotten it. The activity is in memory of the festival of Earth hour. But how much do you learn about Earth hour? Let’s talk about something about it.

Earth hour was launched in 2007 by the World Wide Fund for Nature which is the world’s largest non-governmental organization. WWF expects individual, community, enterprises, and government to turn off lights for one hour that night, in order to reduce the carbon emissions and deal with the issue of global climate together.

Sydney firstly participated in the action on March 31, 2007. About 2.2 million residents closed their lights. Moreover, some famous buildings in Sydney, such as Harbor Bridge and opera house, plunged into darkness for one hour.

Earth hour got strong supports of Chinese government and people, once it came to china in 2009, Beijing, Shanghai, Hong Kong and other cities engaged in the action in succession.

With time flows, the team is becoming bigger. Let’s look at the situation this year, in 2013, Earth hour attracted more than 150 countries, 6000 cities to join in. through the distinctive action, people enjoyed the perfect moment when they can cherish and concern the planet with others,

When lights out, it’s really feast our eyes.

Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco

Tower Bridge in London

Eiffel Tower in Paris

And Victoria Harbor in Hong Kong

Someone would comment that it’s just a show of lights -off, but I think the effort of calling attention to the environmental awareness should be praised. Of course, Earth hour is more than putting out the lights. We also should try our best to protect the environment, for example, recycling batteries, purchasing energy-efficient appliances and so on.

Not only Earth Hour, but also other environmental protection activities are also looking forward to your participation, because we only have one Earth.
