Advantages and Disadvantages of Advertising

Nowadays, advertising has become a big industry and exerts a great influence on our life in both positive and negative ways.

On one hand, advertising has many advantages. To start with, advertising is informative and makes our life more convenient. It provides the customers with a quick access to the product needed and helps them make better choice about what to buy. Secondly, the ads of fashion always introduce the upcoming styles to people who are in their quest for identity so that they can stay in fashion. Besides, advertising brings about competition among advertisers, which can not only urge them to improve the quality of their products, but benefit consumers in some degree as well. More importantly, public service ads can raise awareness of pressing social issues of the day such as education, drug abuse, drunk driving, environmental protection, etc. and stimulate individuals to take positive action.

On the other hand, advertising also has many disadvantages and is widely criticized not only for the role it plays in selling products but also for the way it influences our society. In order to attract more people ’s attention, in many cases advertising presents some untruthful information about products so that consumers are easy to be misled or cheated. What ’s worse, it adversely affects our value system because it suggests that the means to a happier life is the acquisition of more material things instead of spiritual or intellectual enlightenment. As a result, we tend to do many things which are a waste of many.

In conclusion, every coin has double sides. If we are not in complete control of advertising, we can feed off the benefits it offers better and avoid being misled by the false information. Always remember that we ’re masters of our life rather than mindless followers of advertising!
