How are things with you? I watched the film “2012” on DVD yesterday and found it a wonderful film. I strongly recommend it to you.

The film is about an ancient prophesy which forecasts the end of the world in the year 2012. Several ancient civilizations, such as Jewish and Mayan, have foretold the disaster and therefore made the story look rather believable . But the film is less an adaptation of the prophesy than a story of escape from the disaster. The film explores the complicated behaviors of people confronted with death and asks a soul-searching question about human nature: Is there altruism or complete selflessness when people face the final moment of one’s life? I find the film one of the best movies produced by Hollywood in recent years.

V olunteers for International Conference

The Postgraduates’ Association is inviting applications from students who are willing to be volunteers for an international conference on globalization. A group of ten volunteers will be recruited to provide secretarial support for the conference organization. They are required to work an average of 8 hours per week from 10 June to 10 October 2010. Dear editor,

The ban on the free use of plastic bags has come into effect since last year, but I am afraid the situation in this city does not give us any reason for celebration. We still face a lot of white pollution around the streets, in the trees, and on the lakes. People do not seem to care whether their actions have damaged the environment.

Urgent actions should be taken to deal with this problem. I suggest that publicity pamphlets be printed and delivered to homes in the city to raise people’s awareness of the environmental crisis. Laws should be made to impose heavier punishment on supermarkets, department stores or any businesses that are still offering free plastic bags to customers. We can also encourage people to use re-usable bags, such as cloth or paper bags, and subsidise the manufacturers of these bags. If these actions are put into place, I believe we shall see enormous changes a year from now.

In the picture we see a traditional wooden boat with a boatman steering it with a long wooden pole. In the boat, two tourists seem to be enjoying not just the cruise , but also the food they bring on the boat. One of them throws the unwanted left-over food and the wrapping paper into the lake.

These two men are obviously not the first to throw food and packages into the lake, which has already been littered with a great deal of similar rubbish. From what looks now on the lake, it has already been heavily polluted with the garbage that tourists left behind, or what the picture-caption calls “Leftovers of Tourism”.

The picture strikes me as a thought-provoking criticism of tourists’ bad habits. It forces us to review our behavior and ponder if we should only think of our own pleasure and convenience, and ignore the order and tidiness of the places we visit. It forces us to reconsider our relationship with nature and ponder what we should do to make our activities friendly to the environment. I know from news reports that, not just is such bad tourist behavior taking place inside our own country, but some of our countrymen are also taking their bad habits abroad. In this sense, the picture poses challenging questions on the relationship between individual behavior and public interests, as well as on our very idea of morality.

Obviously, many of our countrymen need education, not just in environmental protection, but also in moral principle. Everyone should know that natural beauty belongs to all the society. No individual has the right to damage or litter the beautiful environment.

In the picture we see a hotpot which is cooking a mixture of cultural ingredients : Shakespeare, Enlightenment, Confucius, Einstein, postmodern, deconstruction, martial arts, P eking opera, etc. The words under the picture say, “Cultural Hotpot, Delicious and Nutritious ”.

The picture shows a strange phenomenon in our postmodern society. As globalization makes the world a small village and as the Internet gathers an immense pool of information, communication between different cultures has become possible and frequent. Individuals are likely to absorb knowledge from a wide range of sources . In people’s minds, the East and the West coexist and the ancient mix with the modern. We are learning English language and culture, but the people of the world are learning our language and culture. This cultural exchange will accordingly create a cultural mosaic which pieces together all kinds of cultural fragments.

But facing such a hotpot of knowledge, people may feel confused as to the compatibility of its diverse elements. There is also the danger of “indigestion ” after having consumed such a vast variety of knowledge. If people cannot coordinate the diverse , or sometimes contradictory , systems of thought in their minds, it may well cause disorientation , leading even to conflicts between cultures.

Therefore, there is urgent need for a spirit of coexistence and tolerance between cultures. There is also urgent need for a spirit of equality and harmony. On one hand, we should show respect for other cultures, and on the other hand we must be duly proud of our own cultural heritage . We should be aware of our own identity as Chinese and from this point of view adjust our relationship with peoples of the world. If all people do the same, we shall have a happy and peaceful world.

On the one hand, the spider web is an image of the internet and hi-tech communication which developed at tremendous speed in the last few decades and fascinated people all over the world. Today a net-user can contact anywhere in the world and access a huge pool of information by use of the internet. In this sense the World Wide Web shortens the distance between people and makes information more easily available.

In the picture, we see the crucial moment of a football match. A goalkeeper is standing in front of his goal and a football player is going to make a penalty kick . Somehow, the goal becomes very wide to the goalkeeper and very narrow to the penalty kicker. In the mind of the former , the goal seems too wide for him to catch the ball; while in the mind of the latter, the goal seems too narrow for him to kick the ball in.

The picture is interesting because it shows how our minds work differently when we take different standpoint. Mentally we tend to fear difficulty and exaggerate the difficulty in front of us. The difficult task always looks bigger than it is, just as the goal looks wider to the goalkeeper. There are two reasons for this psychological phenomenon. One is that we do not have enough confidence in ourselves; second is that we are not well prepared for the task we are going to undertake .
