第二节 读写任务 (共 1 小题,满分 25 分)

阅读下面的短文,然后按照要求写一篇 150 词左右的英语短文。

As a kid, I was a little fat. In college, I was less active, and I started blowing up. It got out of control when I went to law school. At the age of 30, I weighed 414 pounds. I was always tired. I have a family history of heart disease, and I was scared. I also wanted to look better. So a few weeks after my birthday, in the spring of 2006, I started to lose weight.

Walking was all I could do at first. I started by walking to a subway stop a few blocks away instead of the one closest to my apartment. I gradually increased the distance. A year later, I started to run. At first I could run for only two minutes, but I kept on.

I made a difference. I was losing nine or ten pounds a month, and I had a lot more energy. I started to think about the New York City Marathon, which goes right past my apartment building. For years, I thought I could never do that. But now I realized that maybe I could?

By my 33rd birthday, in the spring of 2009, I was down to 180 pounds. That summer, I started formally training for the marathon. And on the morning of November 1, I stood on the Verrazano Bridge in Staten Island with more than 40,000 other runners, waiting for the event to start.

When we started moving, it was an amazing feeling to have people cheering me on, handing me cups of water. In Harlem, my mom and brother stood on a street corner, waving. And then I crossed the finishing line in Central Park, and somebody put a medal around my neck. I was in tears from being so happy.

读写任务 (共 1 小题,满分 25 分)

The author was getting very fat when young and he tried to lose weight step by step. He tried hard and even joined in the City Marathon. At last he achieved great success.

Having read the passage, I was deeply touched and admired the author for his insistence. If he had not been so determined and persistent, he would not have lost so much weight and lived an exciting life. His story shows that if one sets his mind to something, nothing is impossible.

It reminds me of a similar experience. One day it was announced that there would be a rope-skipping competition in our class. On hearing the announcement, I felt nervous because I had never done rope skipping before. But my sister, who promised to teach me, persuaded me to have a try. At the beginning I found it hard to learn to skip because my feet always blocked the rope. However, I didn’t lose heart but changed my way of learning. Gradually I could skip faster and faster. Thanks to my sister’s help and my perseverance I took part in the competition confidently, in which I skipped 155 times and ranked fifth.

So my dear friends, I strongly recommend that only with insistence can your dream eventually come true!

In China, people who refuse to allow their houses to be pulled down by developers(开发商) are called “nail households”(钉子户). A number of them have attracted widespread

attention in the press. In one famous case in Chongqing in 2007, a family later nicknamed “the coolest household”, refused to move out of their house that they had lived for three generations. Though developers cut their power and water, and dug a 10-metre deep pit around the house, the owner still lived in it. When a local court ruled that the

house should be knocked down, the angry owner flew a on the top of his house with a slogan of “the government respects and preserves human rights”. 85% net users surveyed on Sina.com at that time supported the family rather than the developers. Experts believed the conflict between the two parties reflected a growing dissatisfaction among common people.

Finally “the coolest household” reached an agreement with the developers after two years’ negotiation(协商). However, the problem hasn’t been done yet with lots of other incidents of “nail households” exposed to the public, and the discussion still goes on.

第二节:One possible version:

The Chongqing incident about “nail households” which have received considerable concerns in the press, highlights an increasing conflict between common people and developers. Most people take a sympathetic attitude towards those “nail households”. The conflict between “nail households” and developers has been brought into

focus.

From my perspective, the reason why the nail households fight against developers is that the public interests sometimes confront with private properties. If this issue isn’t dealt with properly, the goal of harmonious society can’t be achieved. Therefore, drastic measures should be taken to undo this problem.

First of all, developers are supposed to contact with the owners of the houses which

are to demolishment. It makes sense if developers visit one home after another to settle with the payment. To hammer down their house only with a piece of notice could only upgrade the conflict. In addition, the local government is responsible to the personal safety of the weak part, keeping them from being attacked, and making sure that the negotiation is carried out in peaceful and willing way. In brief, there is still a lot to do to help solve the problem.

It’s beyond doubt that the incidents of “nail households” have brought a large quantity of unfavorable consequences on building up a harmonious society. Welfare of one family can mirror the progress of a society. Only by lessening the confrontation of nail

households can we live together happily.
