Advantages and disadvantages of Internet With the rapid development of IT, an increasing number of people now have access to Internet. But what have those wwws brought to us?

On the one hand, they make our life more convenient and efficient. First, various websites provide us with enormous information in such fields as politics, economy, culture and academic studies and so on. Second, Internet offers a much better means for people to communicate with each other. For example, we may contact anybody at any corner of the world at any time. Third, they provide a variety of means to entertain and relax people.

But on the other hand, Internet has also incurred many social problems. For instance, higher juvenile delinquency/youth crime rate due to Internet violence and pornography; children addiction to computer games; Internet fraud and blackmail; and various diseases from the overuse of computers.

As the traditional saying goes, “every coin has two sides ”, Internet itself is not good or bad. How many advantages and disadvantage it possesses depends on how we use it.

Earthquake

Strong earthquakes such as those in Wenchuan and Yushu destroyed many buildings and killed many our folk people, which saddened the survivors and the people from all over the country. The natural disasters will of course block our economic development. But it is our sincere hope and firm belief that the victims will not lose hope because the government and the people will provide timely aids to those quake-stricken areas.

First, the government will allocate a

large sum of fund to support the re-construction of the quake areas. Second, charity organizations in the world will also provide some financial support to those areas. Third, other parts of the country can join the “one-to-one aid and relief program” to help those areas. Last but not least, many individual volunteers such as engineers, teachers, psychologists and doctors will participate into the relief work.

With the help from all walks of the

society and the strong will of quake survivors, we are sure that the quake areas will soon recover and march into prosperity. Gook luck to Wenchuan and don’t cry, Yushu!

Food safety

With the fast development of the society and economy, more and more social problems have appeared. Food safety is one of the problems threatening the Chinese people. According to a recent survey, more than10000 people died of poisonous food or vegetable each year.

So how to handle this emergent issue becomes one of the top priorities of the government. As for common citizens, we can avoid the happening of more food safety accidents by the following means: first, we should buy food and vegetables in large and licensed markets. Generally speaking, the commodity sources of the large markets are better guaranteed. Second, we should attach more importance to the producing date before we buy them and the cleaning and washing procedure after we buy them. As for the government, stricter laws and regulations should be passed to have a tougher examination over the food and vegetables, thus protecting the interests of the people.

To sum up, the solving of the food safety issue demands the effort mainly from the government on the one part, and some effort from the common people on the other part. So each of us should make some contributions to food safety.

Health and Wealth

Different people may have different attitudes towards life. Some attach much importance to their health; while others, more to wealth, that is, how much money they own.

Then what is the correct attitude towards health and wealth? As far as I am concerned, heath is of course much more important than wealth, though the latter also plays a significant role. For one thing, people with good health can do work with full energy and their excellence in work in turn contributes to their health and happiness. For another, an unhealthy person is seldom able to show interest in everything around him and therefore he loses many opportunities to achieve success. Besides, no matter how much wealth a person owns, his money will be nothing if he loses health and becomes seriously ill. Finally, if a person is preoccupied with wealth-earning, he is likely to be at least mentally unhealthy, which means he will lose his happiness completely.

Therefore, no matter how much wealth we desire and possess, the primarily important thing in our life

should be health. Only by being physically and mentally healthy, can we really enjoy the blessing of life.

Low-carbon life

With the rapid development of modern industry, more and more co2 is being emitted to the atmosphere. This greatly damaged the ozone layer which is a natural shield for us. This in turn leads to more skin cancers and some other diseases. Therefore, it is imperative/urgent/necessary for us to reduce the emission of CO2. That is, we should learn to live a low-carbon life.

Then what should we do to live a low-carbon life? First, we can better equip the plants with advanced devices to purify the industrial emissions. Second, we can use more solar energy, wind energy to reduce the consumption of coal. Third, we should take full use of public transportation means so that we will reduce the use of private cars, which will surely save a large amount of gasoline and decrease the car exhaustion.

To conclude, there is no doubt that a low-carbon life will benefit all the human beings. And as is known to all, our environment has been severely damaged. So we are supposed to take immediate actions to reduce the emission of carbon in order to save a better environment for ourselves and our children and grandchildren.

Should our China further encourage private

cars

Nowadays people are becoming increasingly better-off. To most of the urban people, to buy a car becomes not only necessary but also possible. It’s true that cars have brought us a lot of convenience. But on the other hand, cars have also caused many problems.

Firstly, cars consume too much oil, which contributes to the energy crisis. That is one of the threats people are facing today. Secondly, cars brings more traffic jams and traffic accidents. According to statistics, about 1000 people are killed every day on average. Thirdly, car exhaustion is one of the major pollutants. And noise is another typical example. (and noise is adversely influencing people’s rest.)(and now it is not easy to find a noise-free place in cities.)

Last but not least, people who drive cars have much less chances to walk on foot, which also results in weakness of our body.

2 From the above-mentioned, although cars have many advantages, yet their disadvantages overweigh their advantages. Therefore, I don ’t think that our government should further encourage the purchase of cars.

Free admission to museums

Nowadays, more and more museums

provide free admission to visitors, the purpose of which, according to the authorities, is to promote the development of culture and to increase the public awareness of history of their cities.

However, with more and more people

enjoying free access to museums, a series of problems also occurred. First, free access leads to shortage of funds to maintain the museums. For example, a lot of museums lack money to purchase modern devices to protect the articles on exhibition. And lack of fund also makes it impossible to enlarge the scale of the museums. Second, with poor equipment, the service quality has also declined. Even some museums have to be shut off. Third, the number of visitors actually is not large as the government ever expected even with free admission. Thus, to a certain degree, this resulted in a kind of waste of resources.

To solve the above problems, the

government should increase its investment on museums on the one hand, and open more channels to raise fund on the other hand. For example, the government can allow more private funds to enter this industry and encourage more donations. And I believe with the co-effort of the government and the people, the original purpose of free admission will be realized.

Drunk driving

With the rapid development of

automobile industry of China and the drastic increase of private cars, the traffic accidents are also on a rising trend. Statistics show that 63% of the traffic accidents could be attributed to drunk driving last year.

So it can not be denied that drunk

driving has become a serious social problem threatening the safety of the public. What measures should be taken to deal with this problem. As far as I can see, first, we can raise the safety and legal awareness of the public through education. Second, the government should formulate more strict laws to punish those drunken drives. Third, we can rely more on technology to equip the automobiles with certain devices that will automatically prohibit drunk driving. We are suppose to take immediate actions to solve the urgent problem to protect the safety and health of the public. So long as all the sections of the society work together, drunk driving will be greatly reduced and even eliminated. Re-employment With the rapid development of the economy and education, employment has become a universal problem. Statistics show that 21% of the employees were laid off last year. As we all know, re-employment is a urgent need to the laid-off workers. Then what can we do to increase re-employment rate? As far as I can see, first, the government should invest more to create more job opportunities and provide more vocational training to the laid-off workers to offer them more chances to be re-employed. Second, the government can encourage the establishment of more private companies which can not only solve the re-employment problem of oneself but also of many others. Third, the laid-off workers should better adapt themselves to the changing society by acquiring more skills and develop a realistic attitude toward re-employment. Re-employment demands the efforts both from the government and the individuals. So long as we find effective measures and take immediate actions, we can create many job opportunities for the lay-offs to ease their pressure in life, and in turn ease the social tension.

The chart above shows the number of MS/MA candidates has been climbing over the past years. It has rocketed to 1.3 million in the year of 2005. People at different walks of life may ask why. In the first place, we are living in an era of knowledge explosion. If we want to survive in the current society, we must have a good command of knowledge. Therefore, more and more people apply for MA/MS degree after their four-year college education. In the second place, nowadays, it’s difficult to find a good job just with a college degree. In order to find a better job, more people further their education. Therefore, they would like to conduct further study instead of doing the work that they dislike. As a consequence, more and more people apply for MA/MS degree, which has led to the great increase of MA/MS candidates.
