1. Is a Test of Spoken English Necessary?(A3)

A test of spoken English will be included as an optional component of the College English Test (CET). Some people argue that it is absolutely necessary to hold a test of spoken English in China because we have been informed frequently that a Chinese student who has been learning English for over ten years cannot even communicate with a native speaker. Sometimes even those top students who excel in grammar and

writing skills find their English inadequate to express their thoughts freely. A test of English will bring the college students an awareness of the importance of oral English, and will thus help them with their communicating skills.

On the other hand, some others still maintain that a good command of reading and writing skills will be enough for the English learners. To some extent their opinion derives from the fact that students are already under considerable pressure from their coursework. Another required test will only add to their burden. Moreover, some students may take the shortcut by focusing on several guessed questions according to the fixed format of the test, hoping for a coincidence to bring them good luck.

In my opinion, a test of spoken English will do more good than harm. Since China will continue its policy of opening and reform, the ability to speak English fluently is a must for anyone who wants to surpass others in a highly competitive society. Whether I take the test or not, I shall spare no efforts to practice oral English in the remaining years of my college study.

2. Interests(A2)

It is no doubt that everyone has his interests. For example, your sister is interested in stamp collecting; your brother takes interest in physics; and you yourself have a liking for computer.

To develop your interests will help you make way in the world. If you like to be a teacher and you receive adequate education, you will certainly make yourself a successful one. If you cultivate your various interests properly, you will probably find it easier to find a job or profession.

Sometimes you have to give up your interests for one thing or another. If you have a family and still you have a great interest in watching TV or some other pastime, you have to give it up from time to time so that you can help with housework or spend time with your lovely kid.

3. Honesty(A1)

What is honesty? Honesty means telling the truth and being fair and upright in act. Honesty is a good virtue. He who lies and cheats is dishonest. Those who gain fortunes, not by hard labour, but by other means, are dishonest.

Honesty is the best policy. If you are honest in all matters, you'll be trusted and respected by others. A liar is always looked down upon and regarded as a black sheep by the people around. Once you have lied, people will never believe you even if you are telling the truth. The fable of the shepherd boy just makes a typical example. Honest, your reputation will become great. Dishonest, your name will be spoiled and your personality degraded.

Since honesty is so important, we must cultivate it. We should tell the truth at all times instead of making such an excuse as "A little dishonesty is only a trifle thing". We should eradicate immediately the seed of dishonesty once it is sowed in our minds.

4. The Generation Gap(A1)

The generation gap is the different ideas and attitudes toward the same matter between different generations.

What causes the differences then? It is the rapid changes in a society that make many things different. Different generations receive distinct education, and therefore have different knowledge and experiences. Parents want their children to follow their old-fashioned and traditional rules and values. But the youngsters like to accept the modern ones and reject to maintain the old ones. Each generation has different things to do and they tend to have different attitudes towards many matters. Therefore, generation conflicts always arise.

In order to narrow the gap, each generation is supposed to be aware of the needs of the other. Has the idea ever occurred to you that each generation should respect the other, listen to the other and discuss problems with the other patiently?

5. Travelling(A3)

People who like travelling have their reasons. They maintain that travelling can help them expand their scope of knowledge, especially geographical and historical learning. They go on to point out that touring provides more chance for them to enjoy food and try on clothes, which otherwise would be impossible.

Those who dislike travelling have their reasons, too. They would argue that travelling means a considerable amount of money and energy. For example, traffic and accommodation calls for money and walking while seeing sights often tires you. In practice, travelling does more good than harm. If your finance and health permit, you might as well do some travelling from time to time. It will at least enable you to get familiar with people and things that you may well grow to like and love.

6. A Good Friend(A2)

Everyone wants a friend who encourages the best in him. Such a friend shows he is interested in strengthening another. He can be counted on to give his support, and he will criticize, too, because he knows a person has to have feedback to grow and change.

A good friend thinks carefully before he criticizes. He always asks himself whether his criticism is fair. He tries to find out all the facts involved in a situation because he knows how harmful inaccuracy can be.

Kindness is also important to him. He wants to understand what the other person is feeling and respect those feelings. If a friend is both accurate and kind as a critic, everyone respects what he says. His criticism is something like love.

7. Automobiles(A2)

Automobiles, as the product of modern civilization, have been playing a vital part in the daily activities of human society. Industry needs automobiles for transportation. Agriculture needs automobiles for farming as well as transportation.

Every day, automobiles drive people to or from work. At weekends, automobiles take families to joyful outings. And during travelling seasons, automobiles are all the more a common sight everywhere, even in remote areas. It can be said that the wheels of automobiles move human society forward.

But automobiles have also given rise to a series of problems. For example, cities are overcrowded with automobiles. They make big noises and cause traffic accidents which disable or kill many people each year. Worst of all, perhaps, the air is polluted by the gases produced by automobiles. Some of the gases are poisonous and dangerous to health.

Obviously, automobiles, like anything else, have more than one side. While they are so indispensable to mankind, they also bring us serious problems. It's only hoped that mankind, while making the most out of automobiles, will eventually find satisfactory solutions to problems.

8. The World Is Getting Smaller And Smaller(A1)

Most of us may have such experiences: When you go to some place far away from the city where you live and think you know nobody there, you are surprised to find that you run into one of your old classmates on the street. Perhaps both of you would cry out, "What a small world!"

Why is the world getting smaller and smaller? For one thing, faster and safer means of transport have greatly reduced distance. In the past it took people eight weeks to cross the Pacific Ocean, but now an air journey from Shanghai to New York only takes eight hours. For another, the quickening pace of modern society creates more opportunities for people to visit each other. For example, business activities and cultural exchange have brought peoples into constant contact with the world. So we may safely draw the conclusion that the more advanced a society and technology, the smaller the world will be.

9. Make Our Cities Greener(A1)

In recent years, while our industries and business have developed quickly, the number of tress in many big cities has dramatically reduced. Efforts are being made to prevent more trees from being fallen down, but it is of importance to realize the significance of making cities greener.

Making cities greener has many advantages. First, it can make our air cleaner. Scientific research has proved that trees can reduce great amount of carbon in the atmosphere through absorption. Second, it can render our cities more beautiful. With trees and flowers everywhere, there is a pleasant feeling that we live in a beautiful garden. Finally, it can produce timber — an effective way to solve the problem of the limited supply of natural resources.

Making our cities greener requires a nationwide effort. There should not only be a widespread awareness of its contribution to urban environment, but also a common action to plant more trees and preserve them from commercial use.

10. Health(A1)

Health is the foundation of one's future success. If you become sick, it is impossible for you to go on with your study or your work.. On the contrary, if you are strong, you can overcome the difficulties that lie ahead of you.

How can you have good health? Firstly, you should do exercise every day to strengthen your bodies. Secondly, you should form some good habits, such as early rising. If you get up early, you can breathe fresh air. Thirdly, you should pay great attention to your health. If you are getting sick, you'd better go and see a doctor. In a word, nothing is more valuable than health. In good health, a student may absorb more knowledge and solve more complex problems. In good health, scientists can achieve more success and make more contributions.

11. Advantages and Disadvantages of Telephone(A2)

Telephone is one of the most welcome and popular communication means. It is a great carrier of massages. Many people use it almost every day. I can hardly imagine how we would get on if we didn't have telephones.

There are some advantages of telephones. The first is speed and the second is directness. If you want to get an immediate connection, it is obviously quicker to phone someone than to write a letter. If you want information, it is probable to get it directly by telephone. Another advantage is that telephone can give you a personal feeling. If you want to talk or get in contact with a friend or a relative, you feel much closer to them when you are talking to them on the telephone.

However, telephones have some disadvantages. If you have a telephone at home, it often rings at an inconvenient time. It may ring when you are having a bath or when you are watching your favourite television program. Another disadvantage is that sometimes you might misunderstand what somebody is saying. If it is a matter of really important information, it is probably safer to have it in a letter than on telephone.

12. Ways of Relaxing(A1)

"All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy" is a popular saying in English. There is much truth in it. It means that in order to keep ourselves in good health, we must take sufficient recreations.

Everyone has his own way of relaxing. For people who sit much of the time at work, cycling is said to be a capital means of exercise. A good brisk walk is one of the finest forms of exercise, too. For people engaged in outdoor work, reading is an excellent change if suitable books are chosen.

I like sports and enjoy participating in them. My favourite sport is table-tennis because it brings the whole body into action. In fact, it doesn't matter whether I play a game of ping-pang or concentrate on the bridge table. It is important for me to relax from time to time.

13. The Way to Success(A1)

Everyone tries to achieve success in his career. However, someone finally attains his goal while another fails. Why? The one continues his cause to the end

through long periods of hard struggling, but the other is easily disappointed or stops halfway.

Strong will, perseverance and diligence are the three essentials of success.

A man of strong will and perseverance always has an inflexible spirit. He sticks to his cause no matter how tough it might be. Dr. Sun Yat-sen was such a man. Many of his attempts failed, but he held to his purpose with firmness and finally succeeded in overthrowing the Qing Dynasty. Diligence means steadiness in one's work and study. Su Qin stabbed himself in order to keep attentive to studies. Marx often worked 15 hours a day. Life is short and we have many things to do. Without diligence no one can achieve anything.

I believe that where there is a will there is a way, and that success belongs to those who can suffer long years of patient toil and constant efforts.

14. Money(A2)

As we all know, money is as important as air and water in the commercial world. Whatever we buy, wherever we go, we need money. Without it, there is nothing we can do, so to speak.

However, we cannot take it for granted that money is everything. It has its negative effects, too. For example, some people may misuse money by gambling, drinking excessively or addicting themselves to drugs. Some others may even commit crimes in order to get much money.

In my opinion, money itself is neither good nor bad. What counts lies in how to make good use of it. We need money in our daily life, but we should not be the slaves of money.

17. My View on Fate(A1)

There is no consensus of opinions among people as to the view of fate. Some people believe that everyone is born to a certain fate that he can not change, while some other people think that every man is the master of his own life.

As far as I am concerned, I agree with the latter opinion. There is a saying, "Everyone is the architect of his own future," which means one's fate is decided in his own hands. In fact, no one is destined to a certain fate in his or her life. Those who claim that they were born to fail or be unlucky just can't realize how much inner strength and ability they have. We must depend on ourselves to change our lives and make us successful and happy.

Let's take Hellen Keller, an extraordinary American woman, for example. When she was only 19 months old, she became blind and deaf. Instead of accepting her misfortune helplessly, she showed great courage and unconquerable spirit in fighting against her destined fate and was awarded the President's Medal of Freedom in 1964 because of the achievements she had made for helping the blind, the deaf and the speechless. This story tells us that a wise man is always creating his own fate rather than waiting for good luck.

In conclusion, I believe that everyone is born equal and is the builder of his

own fate. We can have good fortune only if we take pains and work hard. We should bear the following saying in mind, "Every man is the master of his own fate."(266)

18. My View on Wealth(A1)

There is no consensus of opinions among people as to the view of wealth. Some people claim that wealth is the most powerful and important thing in life, while some other people believe that there are many things that can not be bought with wealth.

As far as I am concerned, I agree with the latter opinion. Just as an old saying goes "Money can cure hunger, but it can't cure sadness," which means wealth can buy us some material things but can not make us happy and free from sadness and worries. In fact, happiness, true love, friendship, time, health are the most valuable things in the world and can never be bought with money. Those who try every means to make money for nothing just can't realize the true meaning of life and become the slaves of wealth. We should not live for money and consider it to be everything.

For example, a millionaire who suffered from serious cancer was willing to buy his health at the expense of his whole fortune, but he failed and soon died in despair. This story tells us that money is far from omnipotence.

In conclusion, I believe that money is not all powerful and there are some more important things that make our life meaningful and worth living. What we should bear in mind is that, "Money is a good servant but a bad master."(234)

19. My View on the Negative Effects of Films(A1)

Nowadays, people constantly find themselves exposed to various films. Films are indeed necessary to people. But some of the films really have negative effects on our life.

The negative effects of these films are obvious. Some films are misleading. For example, some contain violence. The children like to imitate what they see in the films. So they are more likely to commit a crime when they grow up. Some films bring spiritual contamination. For instance, vulgar scenes sometimes appear in the films. Thus people's daily life is affected by the negative films.

Therefore a strict law should be issued to keep the films under proper control. Under the guidance of this law, I think, films will play a better and better role in the future.

20. Advantages of Advertisement(A1)

Advertisement is an effective way for the producer to introduce his products and the customer to know about the products he intends to buy. It is advantageous to both the producer and the customer.

The producer, in an advertisement, usually offers detailed information about the products advertised, such as their good quality, their cheap price and their popularity. As a result, the products may sell well and the producer may benefit a lot.

For the customer, advertisements provide him a good chance to get necessary

information about the products he needs. For example, he can know where to get what he is badly in need of, and he can choose some products to his liking. Without advertisements people might have to grope in the dark.

So we can safely say that advertisements are necessary and beneficial to both the producer and the customer. In fact, there are many things to be said for it. And I haven't said them all.(160)

21. Should Smoking be Banned?(A3)

Should smoking be banned? Answers to this question vary greatly.

Some people are in favor of the idea of smoking. They always insist that it can get rid of the tiredness and make them refreshed. And giving and being given cigarettes in their views is a sign of friendship. Therefore, they carry cigarettes with them wherever they go.

But other people consider it very harmful to people's health. They have heard the official reports that one person in the world dies from smoking every second. And doctors have been warning that smokers are more likely to have lung cancer and stand more chances of having heart attack. In addition, smoking pollutes the air and may cause fire accidents. Thus it has become a major threat to people's life and property.

There is some truth in both arguments, but human's life and property outweighs anything else. If smoking brings us illness and death, why not have it banned by the government? Without cigarettes, can't we come up with better ways to express our friendship and make us refreshed?

22. Is Television a Blessing or a Curse?(A3)

Now, it is generally accepted that television plays an important part in people's lives. But there is an ongoing heated discussion as to whether television is a blessing or a curse.

As is often pointed out by some people, television keeps one better informed about current events, allows one to follow the latest development in politics and science, and offers and endless series of programs which are both instructive and interesting. The most distant countries, the strangest customs and the most attractive scenes of nature are brought right into one's room.

However, other people insist that television is a curse rather than a blessing. They argue that it has brought about many serious problems. The major one is its effects on young people. They are now so used to getting their information, education and entertainment from television that their literacy as well as physical ability has been greatly weakened. Even worse than that, vulgar commercials and indecent programs may cultivate their bad tastes, distort their viewpoints towards human life to such a degree that their minds might be corrupted.

In summary, television has both advantages and disadvantages. Whatever effects it has, one thing is certain, television in itself is neither good nor bad. It is the use to which it is put that determines its value to society.

23. Getting to Know the World Outside the Campus(A1)

It is important for college students to get to know as much as possible about the world outside the campus. One reason is that knowledge without practical experience is just like trying to walk on one leg. Another reason is that maintaining contact with the world outside the campus helps the student become mature and responsible.

There are many ways in which a student can get to know about the outside world. First, the mass media can keep the student up to date on political, cultural and sporting events, as well as the latest development in science and technology. Second, voluntary social services, home tutoring and surveys of factories or farms all offer students wide opportunities to get to know how ordinary people live.

Personally, I intend to study hard to lay solid foundation for my future career. At the same time, I will take every opportunity to gain experience about the world beyond the campus by doing part-time jobs.

24. Getting to Know the World Outside the Campus

With the development of our society, the campus should no longer be an "Ivory Tower". It is necessary for college students to go outside to get to know the world. They should acquire knowledge not only from books but also from the society. Thus they can adapt to society more quickly after graduate from school.

Science and technology are developing rapidly with each passing day. Most students can keep themselves informed by watching TV, listening to the radio, reading newspapers and using computers. It's also good to take a part-time job, such as tutoring, or working in a restaurant. Any of these methods will enable students to get in touch with society.

Summer vacation will soon be here. I've already enrolled to be a volunteer to help others. I think I can do well. Although I won't be paid, the most important thing is that I can learn a lot about society.

25. Practice Makes Perfect(A1)

Practice is the key to success in all fields of activity. It is practice alone that enables us to build up speed and efficiency. When we accomplish something perfectly without wasting effort, this is the result of long practice.

Take the study of English for example. Only practice can enable us to spell words correctly and master the rules of grammar. And it is also through practice that we can become fluent in speaking and writing, there is no other way. Another good example is sports. Practice is the only way to become stronger and run faster. Besides, in team games practice is what improves our sense of cooperation and helps the team to win.

To sum up, there can be no achievement which is not based on a solid foundation of practice.

26. My Most Favorite Program(A1)

China Central Television (CCTV) today offers a great variety of programs to satisfy different needs and tastes. For example, the weather forecast is of special interest to farmers. For another example, the concert program appeals greatly to music lovers. The sports world attracts large numbers of sports fans. My most favorite TV program, however, is the news network.

The news network has several points that are worth mentioning, as far as its contents and features are concerned. For one thing, it covers news about important events at home and abroad. Besides, the news it provides is timely and reliable. Finally, broadcast in the evening during the so-called "golden time", the news network program reaches a wide range of audience.

As for me, I like the program chiefly for two reasons. One is that it keeps me informed of the state of the nation and the world at large, which is essential to a college student. The other reason is that, since the news covers a comprehensive area and is fairly brief, it saves me much time from reading other newspapers for current affairs. In short, watching the news network on CCTV has become an indispensable part of my daily life.

27. Advantages of a Job Interview(A1)

You may have a job interview first if you want to get a good job before graduation. For an interviewer, he may have a lot of interviewees to choose, and for an interviewee, he may also have many jobs to choose. Therefore, both the interviewer and interviewee should be careful about their decision. It is only through the interview that both of them can know more about each other.

On the one hand, the interviewer will make the interviewee know something about the job such as the property, the working conditions, salary, welfare, and ect. He may also ask the interviewee the reasons of applying for the job in order to know what he is. All these will help the interviewer to decide whether the interviewee is fit for the job or not.

On the other hand, the interviewee will try to introduce himself in order to leave the interviewer a good impression. He will make the interviewer get some ideas of his educational background, ability, character, interest and viewpoint of the job. Remember to show your confidence in yourself. All these help the interviewer to decide whether you are suitable for the job or not.

28. No Pains, No Gains(A1)

No pains, no gains. This is a proverb full of logic. If we are to reach the top of a mountain, we must climb it. If we hope to achieve success, we have to do hard and painstaking work. On the contrary, the less one pains, the less he gains. To do nothing is to bring ruins upon oneself.

Examples can be easily found to make a case for this proverb. A scientist may be well-known for his discovery. He is greatly rewarded for it and praised wherever he goes. Yet, how many sleepless nights did he spend doing experiments in his laboratory? No one knows. For a champion athlete, all the sweat proves to be necessary. Even a student's scholarship is preceded by hard work.

In a word, happiness brought by success goes along with sacrifice of rest, relaxation and entertainment. Gains and pains unexceptionally go hand in hand.

29 Jobs for Graduates(A1)

Job hunting has always been a headache for college graduates. Though many graduates are employed right after graduation, some are not. Most serious of all, some still have no idea where to go working even a long time after graduation. The reasons for this phenomenon are various. On the one hand, a few years ago colleges and universities enrolled so many students in popular majors, such as economy, finance and so on that the number of graduates was greater than the need in the market. On the other hand, most graduates would rather stay in large cities without suitable job to do than go to the country.

I think the problem can be solved if both colleges and students take measures. First, they should research the market and develop special skills to suit its need. Second, students' attitude towards employment should be changed. They should go to some small cities and country. There they can also give full play to their professional knowledge. In a word, if we pay much attention, the problem can be solved.

[标题] Changes in People's Diet Directions: Write a three-paragraph composition to:

1. State the changes in people's diet in the past five years. 2. Give possible reasons for the changes. 3. Draw your own conclusion.

Changes in People's Diet

As can be seen from the table, great changes have been taking place in people's diet in the past five years. Grain, as the main food of most Chinese, is now playing a less important role, while the proportion of some high-energy foods, such as milk and meat, has increased.

What has caused these changes? I think there are two reasons. First, people now have more money. The price of meat and milk is much higher than that of grain, so

in the old days people couldn't afford them. Now they have enough money to buy both meat and milk. Second, people nowadays pay more attention to the elements of their diet. They look for a well-balanced diet that will be good for their health. In short, there have been changes in people's diet in the past five years because of financial and health reasons, and there will be further changes in the future.

Population of a Small Island State

Directions: Write a composition based on the following graph. The composition

should be entitled "Population of a Small Island State."

From the diagram, we can see that between 1900 and 1950, the population of the state remained a little less than 200,000. Since 1951 it has been increasing rapidly. In the past four decades, the population has gone up by over three times.

There are several reasons for the increase. Firstly, the open policy being carried out in the state has enabled many foreign labourers to work there. Secondly, the beautiful scenery of the small island has attracted many tourists and some of them have been permitted to settle there. In addition, the government may not have realized the necessity of controlling population.

If this trend continues, it is no doubt that the small state will suffer from various kinds of problems caused by overpopultion, such as lack of land resources, food shortage and traffic congestion. Therefore, actions should be taken to control the increase of the population.

Changes in College Students' Ways of

Spending Summer Vacation

(1) state the changes briefly

(3) predict the trend of changes

College Students' Ways of Spending Summer Vacation

A. staying at home

B. traveling

C. doing social investigation

D. other ways

From the two charts, we can see that in the past ten years the number of students who go traveling or do social investigation during summer vacation has increased greatly while that of those who stay at home has decreased a lot.

There are several reasons for the changes. Firstly, with the development of economy, many people have become rich. Students can get financial support from their parents for travelling. Secondly, tourism has greatly developed over the past ten years. Many new scenic spots have been built. In addition, the open policy has brought in from some other countries some harmful ideas on politics and thus aroused among college students some false opinions about China, so the government has been encouraging college students to do investigations on the rapid development in both urban and rural areas.

From the changes in the charts, we can predict that more and more college students will make their summer vacation interesting and meaningful by going to the outside world instead of staying at home.

一. 食品安全 Food Safety

Nowadays, unsafe foods can be found, now and then, in the market, which has aroused a lot of public attention. It is reported that these foodstuff ranges from substandard milk powder, tainted/dyed steamed buns to pork with lean meat powder. Fake commodities are harmful in many ways. To begin with, it is a waste of resource, especially in our country. Second, it has bad effect on the reputation of the real manufacturers and brings about moral Crisis. Above all, all that matters is food. People’s health and lives are severely threatened if someone buys some

unsafe foodstuff.

Measures should be taken to deal with the problem. On the one hand , strict laws should be passed to punish the producers and the sellers. On the other hand, consumers should be told to distinguish the genuine goods from the false ones. At the same time, the government should strengthen the supervision of all aspects of food. I firmly believe this problem will be solved

in the near future.

二、全球淡水短缺 Global Shortage of Fresh Wate

1、人们以为淡水是取之不尽的 (提示:雨水、河

水、井水......) ;

2、实际上淡水是非常紧缺的 (提示:人口增加,工

业用水增加,污染......) ;

原因:1、人口增加;2、工业用水增加;3、污染...... 。

It is widely thought and accepted that the world ’s supply of fresh water will never be run out of (used up) because it comes from such a variety of sources as rain ,river, well. Such an opinion leads to a shocking waste of water.

However (As a matter of fact), the earth is short of fresh water. There are many causes for the shortage of it. First, the word ’s population is growing rapidly. Second, The demand for water is rising. What ’s more, our surroundings has suffered serious pollution. All of the reasons mentioned result in the urgent need of fresh water, especially in some big cities.

Therefore, measures should be taken to deal with the problem. To begin with, strict laws should be passed to control any waste of water. Second, the sense of saving water should be educated among people. Above all, scientists must work even harder to purify the sea water

and polluted water.

三.Drunken Driving 醉酒驾车

Drunken Driving Nobody could have failed to notice the fact that drunken driving has been a grave problem with which we are confronted. Generally speaking, there are several reasons accounting for /behind this phenomenon. Firstly, recent decades have witnessed the rapid development of people’s living standards. As a result, cars gained ever-increasing popularity and have found their way into our everyday life. Secondly, people participate in more activities or banquets than ever before, where they will drink liquor/strong wine. Then, they may get drunk but continue to drive.

Drunken driving is bound to generate severe consequence if we keep turning a blind eye to it. First and foremost, this behavior will directly threaten the safety

of drivers, passengers and pedestrians/goers, resulting in traffic accidents, injuries and even deaths. Besides, treating the injured and repairing broken cars mean a grievous waste of money, time and resources. Last but not least, this irresponsible driving will make the road a nightmare, and thus, it will causes serious losses of faith in governments and the society.

In view of the seriousness of this problem, effective measures must be taken before things get worse. First, it is essential that the supervisory role of laws and regulations should be strengthened to punish those performing drunken driving. Secondly, the public, especially drivers, should enhance their awareness of public safety. With stringent laws and alert public, it will only a matter of time for drunken driving to become things of past. .

四. Living on or out of the Campus?

1. 一些大学生认为住在校外好。

2. 另一些大学生认为住学生宿舍好。

3. 我的看法。

Nowadays an increasing number of college students rent houses out of the campus. Should this phenomenon be banned or encouraged?

There are mainly two different opinions. Some prefer living on campus. They maintain that college students are immature and therefore need be disciplined to some extent. In addition, collective life will benefit their physical and mental health, which is their parents' expectation towards college. On the contrary, others hold that living on campus will wipe out individuality and restrict student's freedom. In addition, sometimes the living conditions and dishes

on campus are unsatisfactory.

In my opinion, I like to live out of the campus. For one thing, as the adults, we are capable of taking care of ourselves and should be on our own to some degree. Besides, there is much room for us to cultivate a variety of hobbies free from interference. For another, universities are not kindergartens where everyone should be obedient. This kind of independent life will protect our privacy and help our individual development, which will in turn make college life more diversified and colorful. So why not have a change and live out of the campus?

五、Starting Career in a Big City or a Small Town

1. 很多的大学生毕业后留在大城市工作;

2. 也有人选择到小城镇开始自己的职业生涯;

3. 结合自己的实际情况谈谈自己的想法。

More people choose to start their careers in big cities, while some people choose to start their

careers in a small city.

Behind their choices are the consideration from different perspectives. Some prefer to stay in the big cities. To them, big cities mean more experiences, more chance ,more space and higher salary . But some other people in small towns can have a quieter and less competitive life. Another reason is they can easily get the

management ’s attention and may win

promotion earlier.

The best choice is the one that suits you most. As far as I am concerned, I prefer to start in a big city. A good begin is half the battle.

Micro-blogging is no longer a strange word. More precisely, it has become part of our life.

As for me, many factors contribute to the widespread of Micro-blogging. First, it is very convenient for people to express their instant feelings at any time. Second, it provides a chance for people to release their inner stress. By revealing their heartfelt emotions on the Micro-blogging, their friends may also know about their conditions and can

offer in-time comfort.

However, Micro-blogging can also be potentially dangerous as it may give away people ’s privacy and other significant information. All in all, Micro-blogging provides us comfort and also inevitably some concerns. We should be careful while using it.

七.On a Harmonious Dormitory Life

1. 宿舍生活有时会出现不和谐的情况

2. 一个和谐宿舍生活的必要性

3. 如何创造和谐的宿舍生活

Dormitory life to one’s life seems like the water to the fish, which is not the barrier but the stepping-stones to our success.

However, thing is far from perfect, because the real dormitory life that we live isn ’t always harmony or peaceful. There are always quarrels, conflicts, even fights when we live together. Of course, the difference between characters, experiences, and backgrounds, which is also the major that have a negative influence on the dormitory life.

As far as I am concerned, each of roommates should value the time that we live in a room together rather than spend it on worthless quarrels, it ’s a kind of wealth that god gave us. To solve the problem, we should learn to tolerate each other. Firstly, it needs us to make more efforts to find others’ advantages rather than shortcomings, try to think over at their points, and respect them. Secondly, we ought to communicate with every roommate as more often as possible ; listening and chatting can be the best way to promote friendship, which is exactly what we easily to ignore ,besides ,it’s also make us be understood further and better. Thirdly, we should be more generous, and we shouldn’t hesitate to give our hands to roommates if they get into trouble; To be kind, warmhearted, and easygoing, and then, you will find, what a harmony life you have share with you roommates!

八、 Traveling

1. 旅游已成为一种重要的休闲方式;

2. 人们旅游的主要目的。

As you travel, you will see beautiful sceneries typical of the region. Besides, you can meet and make friends with people of different races. Today people are so fond of traveling that tourism has become one of the fastest growing industries in most

The main reason why people travel is, perhaps, for pleasure. For on example, having worked hard throughout the weekdays, people will find a wild trip to the nearby mountains a real relaxation. For another example, spending an annual holiday abroad is an especially satisfying experience for those who do not have the opportunity to be away from their homeland. When people return from their travel, they will generally feel fresh and energetic. Traveling is also one of the best means for learning. If you are a careful observer, you can learn much during your travel about geography, biology, and history of the places you visit. In my opinion, the knowledge acquired from travel, as you will find in your life, is more valuable than that from any influential

reference books.

In conclusion, traveling has a lot of advantages. You will be more confident of your life and work if you travel from time to time.

1. 广告深入人们的生活

2. 广告的形式多种多样;

3. 广告带来的弊端。

Advertisements are making their way into people ’s lives. People are influenced by advertisers when choosing what to buy whether they are conscious of

it or not .

Advertisements is a flourishing industry now, and it comes in different forms. There are advertisements published on newspapers, commercials on television or radio. Billboards also carry advertisements. To some extent, good advertising means success while

bad advertising means failure.

However, advertisements also have shortcomings. Whether the information they carry is true or not has become a major problem. The advertiser intends to exaggerate the benefits of his own products. As a result, some consumers are cheated and become victims of such advertisement.

Thus, as customers, when facing an appealing advertisement, we should be clear-headed.

十二、The Problems of Plastic Bags

Plastic bags have found their way into a wide area of everyday life. They are applied in big supermarkets, ordinary shops, small stores and street markets. People put in plastic bags everything they buy. They no longer need to carry cloth bags, leather bags or basket bags with them when go shopping. Obviously it is very

convenient for plastic bags to be used in people’s everyday life. They are also very cheap. They are usually offered free of

However, plastic bags also bring us side effects. Some people throw away plastic bags causally. This causes the white pollution to our environment , which is very harmful because plastic bags can not disappear by natural decomposition. This is certainly not beneficial to our future.

People have to be careful with the use of plastic bags. They should make sure they put the sued plastic bags into the dustbin when they want to dispose of them. It also might be better for people to use the traditional cloth bags to hold the goods they buy instead of using plastic bags.

十三、On College Students’ Job Hunting

Today's college students face choices unheard of years ago. Terms like two way selection, self-employment are not new to them. Many students swarm into job market or look every talent fair for potential employers. The concept of selling oneself rather than hiding oneself is well accepted by

Hunting a job is no small matter. Instead, it is probably one of the most, if not the most, important decisions any of would-be graduates can make in a lifetime. Therefore, they are very serious and cautious when that time comes. It is something that the society has taught them.

As the job market gets shrinking, it has also become a must for undergraduates to work harder than before to keep their competitive edge . More students are engaged in their studies with no distractions . They are investing today for a promising job in the future.

十四、Fashion Pursuit in Colleges

Nowadays a growing number of students in colleges and universities are in hot pursuit of fashion. They are crazy for everything that is prevailing in society, such as owning luxurious mobile phones

and wearing blonde curls.

Many people think it acceptable for college students to follow fashion. College students are tremendously flexible in thought and are easy to accept new things, so following fashion may well reflect their pioneering spirit and also help them form a good habit for their future career. But on the contrary, some people are against it. This is due on the one hand to the fact that as college students, they should devote virtually all of their time exclusively to studying; at the same time, it must be acknowledged that pursuit of fashion may sometimes bring some bad habits, such as competing with others in matter, peacockery and wasting money. As far as I am concerned, college students should have the spirit of pioneering. However, this sort of spirit cannot only be shown by fashion, but also be reflected by academic performance. That is to say we should concentrated ourselves on studies to make a better academic performance instead of owning luxurious mobile phones or

wearing blonde curls.

十五、Private Cars in China

With the rapid development of economy in China, the number of people who own private cars is rising day after day. Quite different views exist as to this phenomenon.

There is no doubt that private cars have been playing an important part in the daily activities of our society. To start with, cars can save time for people when they go out. Second, cars can help parents take their children to school. Moreover, owning a car is a fashion and represents the high quality of life. Of course, others strongly object to developing private cars because automobiles have given rise to a series of problems, such as air pollution, traffic jams and energy consumption. Besides, it causes actual harm

to the health of people.

In my opinion it is impractical to encourage private cars in China. I sincerely believe that private cars should be discouraged in China. At present, we should raise the price of gasoline to the prohibitive level to make car-driving expensive enough. All in all, the development of private cars should be restricted

in China.

十六、Is Telling the Truth Always Better Than Telling Lies?

We are all taught to be honest since childhood. We were made aware that lying was morally wrong and that good people always told the truth. Of course, as a general rule, we should be honest and sincere with others in order to gain the trust from them.

However, it is practically unwise to be honest all the time. In some special situations, we had better not tell the truth. Telling lies is often a way of appropriate communication with others. For example, when we meet someone for the first time, we say, “Nice to meet you!” Perhaps actually we are not pleased to meet them. But this kind of expression is indispensable to creating a friendly atmosphere. If we really speak out the true felling to any one we dislike, I ’m afraid that we would not have friends any more. So long as we don’t hurt others, telling lies is an acceptable practice. That is why “white lie”, telling a lie for good intention, exists in language. On the other hand, when we are dealing with dishonest people , to be dishonest with them does not hurt our credibility .In other words, telling the truth is not always

better than telling lies.

To sum up all the reasons mentioned above, it is not always reasonable to tell the truth. We should be flexible to the circumstances we live.

Is Failure a Bad Thing?

Failure is a common thing in our daily life. For example, sometimes we fail to pass the examinations. On other occasions, we are defeated in sport games. And there are times when we fail to do more satisfactory work. So it is safe to say that every one of us must have encountered failure of one kind or another.

However, different people have different attitudes towards failure. Some people lose heart when they come across failures. They seem to think that it is the end of the world. Others, on the contrary, don’t take failure seriously. They seem to think that failure is first step to success.

In my opinion, what really counts is not failure itself, but our attitude towards it. If we are afraid of failure and yield to it easily, we are bound to have one failure after another. But as long as we have confidence in ourselves and learn something from failure, we ’ll certainly go from victory to victory. So I ’m never afraid of failure, or I firmly believe that “failure is the mother of success.” 作文二:

1、 竞争是当今社会的普遍想象。

2、 竞争和合作经常并存。

3、 在提倡竞争的同时我们不要忘了合作。

Competition and Cooperation

Competition is a very common phenomenon in our social life today. We compete when we play games, we try to do better than others in our study and there is constant

competition for jobs, fame, wealth and so forth. We can say, to some extent, competition is one of the motive force of the development of society.

We often find competition and cooperation occurring at the same time. Think of a basketball game. During the game, one team is competing against the other, but each member of the team must cooperate with his teammates. In most cases, we can’t compete without cooperation. Thus they are equally important.

While advocating competition, we can ’t forget cooperation. In modern society, cooperation is especially important because most work is fulfilled with and through other people. So we must combine competition with cooperation to obtain our goals. 作文三:

1、 城市无论大小都应该保持清洁。

2、 保持城市清洁不是一件容易的事。

3、 为了保持城市的清洁,我们的政府做了大量的工作。

Keep Our City Clean

A city, whether small or big, should be kept clean. A clean environment will do us much good. Without the clean environment, we can hardly keep fit, work efficiently or live a comfortable life, which will greatly hold back the development of the city. So it’s of great importance to keep our city clean.

Moreover, keeping the city clean is not an easy job. We can clean up the city and keep it clean temporarily, but can we keep it clean for good? This arduous work is in close relation to the economy of the city, the government policy and citizens ’ qualities. It demands permanent efforts and scientific measures and right attitudes.

In order to keep the city clean, our government has taken a great many steps, which includes proper investment, making plans and regulations, the disposal of rubbish, the forestation, and the layout of gardens and flower beds and lawns. We can expect a clean and beautiful city as long s all of us do what we should under the leadership of the government.

1、 目前环保还存在着许多问题。

2、 为了保护环境,各国政府做了大量的工作。

3、 我的看法。

Protection of Environment

There are still many problems of environmental protection in recent years. One o the most serious problems is the serious pollution of air, water and soil. The polluted air does great harm to people ’s health. The polluted water causes diseases and death. What’s more, vegetation has been greatly reduced with rapid growth of modern cities.

To protect the environment, governments of many countries have done a lot. Legislative steps have been introduced to control air pollution, to protect the forest and sea resources and to stop any environmental pollution. Therefore, governments are playing the most important role in the environment protection today.

In my opinion, to protect environment, the government must take even more concrete measures. First, it should let people fully realize the importance of environment protection through education. Second, much more efforts should be made

to put the population. Finally’ those who destroy the environment intentionally should be severely punished. We should let them know that destroying environment means destroying mankind themselves.

The Effects of Advertisement

As one of the products of modern society, advertisement has filled almost every corner of the world. We are exposed to them anywhere and anytime. When we listen to the radio or watch TV, the programs are broken up by advertisements that flash on every five or ten minutes. Walking in the street, we find we confronted with endless ad bulletins. Every evening, especially weekend evenings, we find out mailbox full of ad leaflets. With their tremendous power and attractive, advertisements have become a part of our life.

Every coin has two sides, so does advertisement. Advertisement exerts both positive and negative effects upon our life. In order to promote trade, business people engage in making their products known to the public in the most attractive ways so that potential customers find it easier to choose what they are to purchase when faced with shelves of goods in the supermarkets. However, advertisements are not always reliable, as some dishonest businessmen exaggerate the functions and qualities of their products. Customers may be misled and deceived. Such is often

the case, and it does harm the interests of the customers.

Thus, when confronted with an advertisement, we have to be very cautious so as not to be taken in by appealing words and pictures in it. We should remember that advertisements are good at playing with words. What customers should do is to ask about the product and try it, if possible, before purchasing it.

How to Succeed in a Job Interview

1. 面试在求职过程中的作用;

2. 取得面试成功的因素:仪表、举止谈吐、能力、专业知识、自信、实事求是„„

A job interview is indispensable in the process of job hunting. If a job seeker can make the best use of the interview and leave a good impression on the interviewer ’s mind, he may be lucky enough to get the job competed for by many applicants. If, on the other hand, the job hunter gives a poor performance during the interview, he is unlikely to stand a chance to succeed.

To be successful in a job interview, the job hunter should demonstrate certain personal and professional qualities. First, the applicant ought to attach much importance to his appearance and manner of speaking. Second, he is supposed to display his ability, especially his grasp of professional knowledge required by the position for which he is applying. Finally, a really impressive job seeker must convey a sense of self-confidence in and a practical attitude toward the cause concerned. If the interviewee succeeds in displaying these characteristics and presents his most attractive qualities during an interview, the interviewer might

make an on-the-spot decision to take him on.

Is It Good for College Students to Have Part-time Jobs

1、 The advantages of having part-time jobs fro college students.

2、 The disadvantages of having part-time jobs for college students.

3、 The right attitudes.

There are many advantages for college students to take part-time jobs while they are at college. Firstly, part-time jobs will offer us students a chance to demonstrate our ability and to apply what we have learned at college. Secondly, part-time jobs help us become more independent of our families. Thirdly, the experience we gain through part-time jobs may be of great help to our future career. Finally, part-time jobs can broaden our horizon and make our life more meaningful. However, a part-time job has some disadvantages. For example, we may lose time needed for sleep, rest, study, club activities and recreation. For another example, if we take part-time jobs, it is likely for us to be so interested in the work that we can ’t pay attention to our study. As a result, we may fail in our school study, which will affect our future career too.

In my opinion, as a student we should hold the right attitude towards the part-time job, for acquiring knowledge, especially more book knowledge, is our first important task. Although part-time jobs can do us some good in some aspects, we should pay more attention to school study than on it.

1、 网络时代已经到来。

2、 网络影响我们的生活。

3、 充分利用网络资源, 享受生活。

Internet and our life

We are now living in an internet society. It seems that we are overwhelmed in the internet life. Newspapers are talking that the internet age has come.

Everything in our daily life can have relationship with internet: in the morning, we may turn on the computer to check whether we have E-mails from friends of abroad; then we can read some latest news from any websites in the world. To the internet users, there is no borders between nations. People can contact their friends wherever they are, as long as they are connected to the internet. After a day’s work, you may connect to the internet and do some shopping.

Internet makes our lives easy and convenient. So why don ’t we turn on the computer and send a birthday card to our father?

Reading Selectively or Extensively

1、 有人认为读书要有选择

2、 有人认为应道博览群书

3、 我的看法

How should we read? Should we read selectively or extensively? Everyone has his own view.

Some people think we should read selectively. They argue that with the development

of modern science and technology, more and more books are published. It is impossible for us to read all the books. What ’s more, there are many bad books that are poisonous to our mind, and we shouldn’t read them. Since we can’t read all the books, and we shouldn’t read bad books, we must read selectively.

But others may not agree. They emphasize that today’s society is not what it was. If one man has many kinds of knowledge, he’ll have more chances to succeed. If a man knows in one field but knows nothing in other fields, he may be useless. Since we must have many kinds of knowledge, we must read extensively.

Who ’s right? I think both of them have something right. But I think we should read extensively first. We should read books in many fields and read selectively in one field.

Wealth brings happiness

Directions: In this part, you are to write an essay entitled “The Relationship between Wealth and Happiness ”. You can agree or disagree, completely or partially to the above statement. But whatever position you take, you should give sound supporting reasons. At the end of your composition you are required to draw your own conclusion.

Wealth has always been what some people long for. It is true that most of them try to acquire wealth by means of honest labor. Their efforts contribute to the welfare of the society and at the same time to the accumulation of their wealth,

and hence to their happiness.

There is no doubt that wealth brings happiness, especially in the modern society. Various kinds of up-to-date household appliances, latest fashions and recreations make their appearance with each passing day. All this makes our life more comfortable and colorful. Therefore, without money we cannot turn admiration into reality.

Wealth, however, can also lead to disasters, if we have an inappropriate approach to it. Wealth may tempt weak-willed persons to be addicted to harmful habits, such as drug-taking and gambling, and result in their own ruin. Besides, a person may lose his reason and go astray if he intends only to seek wealth and indulges himself in leading a luxurious life. For example, there are some government officials who take advantage of their positions to take bribes from the people turning to them for help . Obviously, wealth may bring us disasters if we don ’t take a proper attitude to it. In my opinion, on no account can we equate happiness with wealth. I also believe that one should never reckon only on wealth to achieve happiness.

Health or Wealth?

Which is more important, health or wealth? When given this question, different people have varied answers. Some insist that health plays a more important role in our life, while others see more advantages arising from wealth.

The first group of people quote the old saying “Health is above wealth” to prove their idea. They argue that, on the one hand, a strong person can do almost anything as long as he/she tries hard. On the other hand, however, rich people will

not be able to enjoy the wealth if their days are numbered.

In contrast, the advocates of wealth have such arguments as follows. For one thing, wealthy people will be able to buy more healthful foods. For another, they can enjoy better facilities to improve their health. (Take my neighbor, Lao Wang, as an example. He had a heart attack and is in hospital. However, he cannot afford the expensive operation, which costs as much as 100,000 yuan. Therefore, he has to lie in bed hopelessly. If he were a rich man, his life could be saved.) (括号中的部分同学们自己可以在别的文章中发挥。)

As far as I am concerned, both health and wealth are important to our life. We should try to strike a balance between them and gain wealth with a healthy body. 作文十一:

It Pays to Be Honest

As society and economy develop, dishonesty is no longer a stranger to us. Manufacturers and businessmen may promise more than their products can guarantee so as to make more profit. Doctors and nurses may lie to their patients for their patients ’ benefit. Students may cheat on exams for better scores. As a matter of fact, dishonesty has become so widespread that wherever you are you find cases of dishonesty.

However, it is honesty that brings benefit both to yourself and to others. By being honest, manufacturers and businessmen build up mutual trust between themselves and customers, which in the long run generates more profit. By telling patients the truth about their conditions so that they can make their own decisions, doctors and nurses enhance their own credibility and honor their profession. By giving honest answers to questions, not only can students themselves learn about their own strengths and weaknesses, but they help their teachers evaluate the quality of their instruction as well. Therefore, it pays to be honest and everybody must learn to be honest.
