Food Safety Problems in China

With the development of economic and society, economic globalization continuing to deepen, food is getting more and more diversified. In recent years, a lot of food safety issues have been exposed by media. It shows that food safety has been one of the most serious problems in modern China.

We can’t survive in the world without food so that the importance of food safety is undisputed. We absorb nutrition from our diet which has a central role to play in ensuring our health. What’s more, health statistics clearly indicate that our health is closely associated with the quality of food. Nowadays, we purchase food from markets, so the food safety there would be of key importance.

I bet all of you know that "the milk powder" accident. It is said that the milk powder producers used the chemicals to raise the protein, which harmed the consumer's health especially the babies ’ seriously. In September 2008, a fresh outbreak of kidney disease occurred that is caused by baby formula contaminated by melamine. Three babies died and over 6,000 were made sick by the tainted formula. On the International Consumer Rights Day on March 15th, 2011, Shuanghui

clenbuterol scandal was exposed by CCTV. Clenbuterol can increase the quantity of

2

lean meat and increase the growth rate of pigs. But clenbuterol is harmful to our health because it can lead to cancer, heart disease, hypertension and poisoning.(Safety in the agri-food chain) There are too many other food safety problems. For example, some people recycle the wasted oil and reuse it after the simple processing which is unhealthy. Similarly the dyed steam buns enter the market which contains pigment additives that will cause harm to people’s heath if we eat too much.

Every Chinese is worried about the food--can we eat safely in China?

Let’s find out the reasons which caused these problems.

The loss of morality

With the development in economy, more and more people just want to earn more money so that some of them lose the basic moral. There are too many unscrupulous businessmen who only know making profit and lose the bottom line of moral. They care so much about benefit that they lose themselves in face of money. They’re dishonest, careless, thoughtless and unreliable. How dare they do this? Honestly, they're smart, but not in a right way.

Inadequate regulations and standards

Chinese laws and regulations are not perfect in some details and some standards are not comprehensive, which provides chances for some businessmen to step in. The government is lack of necessary supervision in food safety. They don’t pay much attention and don't spend enough money on food safety issue. They don't check the food carefully, especially during the produce of manufacture.

Consumers don’t expose unsafe food in time

3

At last but not least, the costumers have responsibility as well. Most of the buyers

buy the food and then eat it without any doubt. Some of the consumers didn't do

anything when they found the foods are not safe. This also encouraged the bad

producers.

It’s no doubt that these unsafe foods are threatening the public safety. China is a

big country in the population, so each public-safety incident will cause a huge

property and personnel damage. Many people were killed innocently by the invisible

killer---junk food. What’s more, the government will lose credibility. After suffering

so many food safety incidents we will ask what the government has done. The voice

of doubt is increasing. The government is not doing what they should do and they has

lost their credibility in the citizens. Now it's the time to say "NO" to the unsafe food,

and it's also the time to take action to stop it.

There are some solutions that can help solve this serious problem.

1. Trying their record on food safety to their evaluations will be an effective way

to motivate officials to supervise the food industry. Besides, enterprises that violate

food safety laws should be punished more severely. A higher forfeit will be a

deterrent.

2. Innovation of the supervision system was also called for. To improve analysis

of the food industry, a new job of professional food safety surveyor should be

developed in China. These professionals could assist governments and ensure that they have the latest information about food safety violations.

3.The government should also pay more attention to raising awareness among

4

residents about food safety and use internet or other medias to tell public whether some kind of food is safe or not.

Although the food safety crisis seems to be concerning every one of us, we can do many things against its pressure. As the saying goes, where there is a will, there is a way. We have paid too much for our ignorance before, but we are now poised to make a difference.
