Ellen deserves better than Newland

Before having any contact with the novel, I thought The Age of Innocence is talking about the purity of love, the innocent love between the young people. I then find the movie on the internet. The movie is decently produced and is faithful to the original novel which saves me the trouble of reading the novel.

I was fascinated by the engagement between May and Newland. They make such a lovely couple. May seems so innocent and delicate that no one can refuse to fall in love her. Back then , Newland was still a vibrant and robust young man, and he was deeply attracted by May. Ever ything looked so perfect and Ellen, May’s cousin showed up. Ellen was Newland’s sweetheart. He once kissed her on the lip without getting her permission. Ellen came to America to avoid her loose husband and intend to make preparation for divorce. Ellen was brought up in Europe, which endowed her independent character. The heartbroken marriage didn’t crush her, the indifference in the hometown failed to terrify her, she is as radiant as a blossoming rose, nothing can decrease her beauty. I think Ellen is just too proud to show her wound. After so many ups and downs in the cursed marriage, she must want to find a person who can truly understand her and give her the real happiness she always long for. My heart goes to the sturdy woman, who is wearing a smiling face in order not to let her friends and families worry but shedding tears in silent corners. Maybe it is this paradox that attracts Newland to Ellen. Then the age-long struggle between the two started. Newland may be an excellent guy, but i dare to say that Ellen deserves a far better one than Newland. Newland is pushy toward Ellen: he wanted Ellen to give up May and be together with him. But he didn’t see this matter in Ellen’s perspective. Having been through so many disturbances, family and kinship is the last thing Ellen wanted to give up. Then Newland urged Ellen to be his mistress, instead of getting closer, this step widened the gap that already existed. I think it as an ill-considered way to seek happiness. Isn’t insulting for Ellen to be his mistress? The answer is definitely yes. While Ellen is a woman who is used to subject to Newland, Newland is not a competent leader. His irritation disclosed his secret. May’s intervention finally nipped the love in the bud. Even till the end of the story, Newland still lacked the courage to see Ellen. He wishes to see her, but he doesn’t know how to face her.

Many loves in this world are defeated by time and space. If one could be a little more courageous, there would be less regrets. In the first year, rose blo ssoms, but the visitor doesn’t come; ten years has passed, the rose blossoms, vibrant and impassionate, but the visitor still misses the date; twenty years has passed, the rose blossoms, even more vibrant and impassionate, but the visitor never show up. It is the same with man, but man is even more delicate than flower. In the first year of separation, the woman wait in the house and party with friends, the man is away; ten years after, the woman is older, the man hasn’t visited; twenty years has slipped by, the woman is old, the man never show a clue of his existence; fifty years has gone by, the man hasn’t come, the rose outside the house is still an elegant scene. Yet the house is empty, because the woman is gone.
