Before Going to School

All the children start going to school when reaching their school age and begin their first decade-long career. This , however, is not as simple as registering on the roster then getting on the school bus every day. The process is complicated as well as fragile. What Gibran said is pithy:“ You may give them your love but not your thoughts. For they have their own thoughts. “(On Children) Children grow up as every one does, losing their innocence just like losing their baby teeth, during which adults feel surprised and pleasant but few care about whether it hurts or scares. Although

primary schools seem all-pervasive, the collective teaching pattern may be defective in some aspects, of which both the school and parents should be aware.

Sociality, for example, is something vague in its period of forming. A child is expected to know how to get along well with each other at the first sight of his peers. However, it is a vital moment that he is thrown into a pool of strangers and starts his first social contact. The social acceptability, in a sense, is inborn rather than built , and those who are not talented in this field obviously need care and help. The school disciplines their students and restricts them from fighting or bullying for safety reasons , but not the aspect of psychology or sociality.

The value of scores is another stumbling block. That students should not be judged only by their scores has been accepted by most people, but as long as there are scores, the confusion will not end. The school is a rudimentary society with single

standards compared with the real one, or perhaps, the social achievements are baldly quantized in the school. It is easy to understand that a straight-A student enjoys a more relaxed environment while his weak classmate is less popular. This is unfair for all of them, for things may well be different in the real society.

It is also of great importance to make it clear that what can be expected to learn from school. The gap exists where the responsibility division of education is uncertain. The children have to pick something up or just miss it for neither the school nor their parents pays enough attention. Ordinarily the school teaches basic knowledge and skills, but it is weak in exploring the individual potentiality. A child may waste his gift for piano in his best age because there is no further special training or his talent is even not recognized.

Generally, The school should not be requested to run the whole show on the way of education, and this kind of awareness and following actions are much rarer. The substance of learning showed in Confucian Analects drives the center: "If a man withdraws his mind from the love of beauty, and applies it as sincerely to the love of the virtuous; if, in serving his parents, he can exert his utmost strength; if, in serving his prince, he can devote his life; if, in his intercourse with his friends, his words are sincere:-- although men say that he has not learned, I will certainly say that he has."( Confucian Analects, Book I: Hsio R, chapter 7)
