Job Problems for Graduates

It is reported that about 30 percent of the graduated are doing jobs which are irrelevant to their majors in 1992, compared with 7 percent in 1981, excluding those who continued study after graduation. People may wonder what makes it increasingly difficult for college graduates to get rewarding and desirable jobs. The possible reasons for graduates’ job problems may be as follows. First of all, many colleges and universities fail to adapt their courses to the changed and developing economy and society. Some institutions of higher learning are offering degree courses which are outdated, irrelevant and impractical that the students find it difficult to apply their book knowledge to practical work. Another possible reason is that there is an oversupply of college graduates in certain specialties, and the number keeps increasing. So many of them cannot enter the profession and have to take other jobs not relevant to their majors.

As the problem remains, possible solutions should be found. The colleges and universities should first adapt their courses to meet the needs of industry and businesses so as to suit the on-going development of national economy. In addition, the government should provide college graduated with more opportunities to display their skills in their work lines.
